What They're Saying: Ohio State-Marshall Aftermath

Bring on the U. Ohio State began its season in dominating fashion, outclassing Marshall in a 45-7 victory Thursday night. The Buckeyes displayed tremendous balance on offense, received strong performances from quarterback Terrelle Pryor and his weapons, and the defense continued its opportunistic ways. The Buckeyes' quest for a national title continues against the team it beat to win the crown in January 2003. Miami comes to town in nine days for a blockbuster matchup.

As expected, two two premier teams playing on college football's opening night cruised to victory behind strong nights by their junior quarterbacks. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 13 Miami each crushed cupcakes Thursday as the teams prepare for their showdown in Columbus next Saturday. The Buckeyes defeated Marshall 45-7 while the Hurricanes beat Florida A&M 45-0. Ohio State's Terrelle Pryor launched his Heisman campaign by completing 17-of-25 passes for 247 and three touchdowns without an interception. Brandon Saine needed just nine carries to rack up 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Ohio State dominant in win over Marshall - CFB News - FOX Sports on MSN
That’s EXACTLY what you want to do if you’re the No. 2 team in America. Ohio State didn’t come out sheepish, didn’t play true Tressel Ball, and didn’t let Marshall have a chance to breathe. Terrelle Pryor was able to be a quarterback, and not a running back who lines up under center, and the offense kept it open (by OSU standards) after all the success from the Rose Bowl.

Buckeyes bury Herd, 45-7 - The Herald Dispatch
"As good as their front four is, they don’t have to bring a lot of extra people so as far as the passing game, they are still dropping seven — usually seven every play," Anderson said. The Marshall offense failed to register a touchdown for the first time since the 2008 Friends of Coal Bowl when the Herd fell to West Virginia 27-3

Chuck Landon: Holliday, Herd can learn from this defeat - The Herald Dispatch
The hope was this Marshall team would fare better than the Herd squads that got pummeled by Virginia Tech, 52-10, in 2009, and Wisconsin, 51-14, in 2008. We hoped in vain. Instead, the beat — and the beatings — went on. To be honest, Marshall didn’t even belong on the same field as the Buckeyes.

Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor on his best play Thursday and the showdown with Miami: Video | cleveland.com
What did Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor think his best play was Thursday night in the Buckeyes' 45-7 win over Marshall? A 7-yard pass to backup fullback Adam Homan. "I was dropping back and I scanned the field through about four checks," Pryor said after the win, "and I looked to see if it was open and I threw it all the way across the field to a checkdown. I think that was my best play."

With heady plays and a strong right arm, Terrelle Pryor hinted at wonders to come for OSU: Bill Livingston | cleveland.com
In the opener, he showed he can put two straight good games together, although they were separated by eight months and one day. The disclaimer is that Marshall is not very good, although the Thundering Herd did go to a bowl and win it last season, beating Ohio (University, not State). But Pryor was all that could be expected, and more. There were no "wow" moments with his legs, proving that the "running quarterback" description of his freshman season is no longer accurate. A knee injury that required surgery curtailed the gliding runs in his sophomore season. But Pryor surprisingly came out throwing early and often against the Ducks in Pasadena, when he was expected to hand off. A chorus of praise followed. Thursday night was more of the same.

Game action proves OSU's Tyler Moeller is healthy and still a big hitter | cleveland.com
It wasn't that Tyler Moeller forgot what it was like to be in Ohio Stadium. In the past year, he's heard the roars and seen the raucous cheering, he's felt the electric atmosphere that comes with Buckeyes football games. But when Moeller sprinted onto the field Thursday night to play his first game in more than a year, it was different. He was back on the field to play, back to hit opponents hard and back to show everyone that he hadn't lost his passion or power. And that he could still hit, and hard.

Bob Hunter commentary: Pass-happy Buckeyes might be here to stay | BuckeyeXtra
Would the Buckeyes build on that impressive offensive showing in Pasadena, or would they revert to the bland no-turnover, no-excitement style they used in plodding through most of last season after the loss at Purdue? Was that a just a pretty mirage in California, or was it real? The mystery is over, or at least it seems to be. The shackles are still off the offense, and Pryor still looks like a complete quarterback who can be trusted to, uh, run with it.

Marshall Thundering Herd vs. Ohio State Buckeyes - Recap - September 02, 2010 - ESPN
"It's a hell of a way to have your first game, isn't it? Against a team like that?" Holliday said. "They're No. 1 or No. 2 in America, picked by everybody, and they showed it tonight. They have a hell of a player at every position."
