BCS National Championship Gamethread: Auburn Tigers vs. Oregon Ducks
What: Auburn Tigers (13-0) vs. Oregon Ducks (12-0)
When: Monday, January 10th; 8:45 p.m. EST
Where: University of Phoenix Stadium; Glendale, Arizona
Television: ESPN
Weather Forecast: 58 degrees; 0% chance of precipitation
Vegas Line: Auburn -1 (Opened at AU -2.5)
- Tonight's game should break the record for the number of plays in a BCS title game, at least in regulation. Both teams run a spread, no-huddle offense designed to exploit defenses through tempo and volume. But each team's scheme is different enough to warrant a closer look.
- Chris Brown guest-posted at Dr. Saturday, breaking down the differences in the scheme. Basically, Auburn loves using traditional running plays like Power and Counter, and then play-actioning off of them. Oregon's entire program is built on the no-huddle, and they run an offense designed to beat you with speed.
- In that vein, Oregon has used a unique defensive strategy this season, rotating in an entire 2nd string regularly during games in order to compensate for the effect their fast-paced offense has on the number of snaps the defense must play. Chip Kelly has said he's going to use 25 defensive players in the title game, which is simply unheard of. This could end up being a brilliant move that keeps fresh legs on Cameron Newton at all times, or it could bomb and put marginally talented players against the Heisman Trophy winner for a significant number of snaps. I have no idea how it will work out, but it's a fascinating subplot to watch.
- Auburn's best bet defensively is to mimic the Ohio State defensive gameplan from the Rose Bowl, and keep it simple. They need to allow their defensive line to own their gaps and sound, fundamental football, but that goes against Auburn's modus operandi on the season. Gene Chizik likes running an aggressive, 4-3 Under defense that gets after opponents, which is exactly the strategy that didn't work for USC against Oregon the past two seasons.
My Pick: Oregon. It's very difficult to justify going against the SEC in a title game, but this isn't a normal SEC team with a championship SEC defense. Both teams want a shoot-out, and I think this fits right into Chip Kelly and Oregon's hands. Ducks win, 45-38.

The whole country that isn’t located in the South East, are ducks tonight.

I deeply hate the SEC.
I don’t exactly love the Pac-10 either, but compared to the SEC, well…

Geez, who thought this would be a defensive battle through a quarter?

Hate to say it, but he bobbled it after he hit the ground.
The ruling on the field was correct.

Now that’s what I call high octane offense.

If anyone thinks that Cam Newton had no idea his Dad was pimping him out, contact me. I have a bridge for sale, super cheap.
They planted it last Tuesday.
How long does it take a field to grow roots? I know nothing about these things.

Still not the game ESPN was hoping for, which makes me smile.

Over/Under 3.5 minutes into 2nd half until Jon Ross stabs his own eyes out before looking at Oregons' socks again?

I'm just glad my dorm fails to have HD, I can't even imagine how that would look.

By that, I mean I can’t get any feel for this game at all. Very different experience with the two no-huddle teams going at one another.
Neither team has really grabbed a hold of momentum.
I thought Oregon was getting going after the 2 point, but the safety killed that.

From a tweet:
To rally the Ducks at halftime, Oregon coach Chip Kelly summoned Emilio Estevez to let them know that ducks fly together
C’mon put this in the end zone.
