It's Official: Stan Drayton Hired as Wide Receivers Coach

Florida running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Stan Drayton has been hired away by the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he will coach wide receivers.

Per OhioStateBuckeyes.com:

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Stan Drayton, one of the top offensive skill coaches in the nation, is joining the Ohio State football staff as an assistant coach working with the Buckeye wide receivers, Coach Jim Tressel announced today. Drayton will start his duties Feb. 1.

"Stan Drayton first and foremost is a fine person and family man. He is a Buckeye born and bred, and will add a tremendous dimension to our football family," Tressel said. "We are fortunate to gain one of the finest coaches in America to serve our kids, school and community."

Drayton comes to Ohio State from Florida, where he served as the Gators' running backs coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2010 season; he also served as Florida's running backs coach from 2005-07, and held the same position at SEC schools Tennessee (2008) and Mississippi State (2004).

With coaching experience and success at every level, Drayton's resume includes stints as an assistant coach at Syracuse (2009), Bowling Green (2000), Villanova (1996-2000), Penn (1995), Eastern Michigan (1994) and Allegheny (1993). From 2001-03, he served as the offensive quality control and assistant special teams coach for the Green Bay Packers, helping them to three NFC playoff appearances. He is a past nominee for the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year award, and was recognized by Rivals as one of the nation's top 25 recruiters.

Three times a first-team All-America selection as a running back at Allegheny (Pa.) College, Drayton is Allegheny's all-time leading rusher and scorer and was a part of the 1990 Division III national championship team. He still holds the Division III single-season record for touchdowns scored per game (3.2). Drayton was a two-time All-American in track as well, competing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. A 1993 graduate with a bachelor's degree in English, Drayton was inducted into the Allegheny College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

A Cleveland native who is a graduate of John Marshall High School, Drayton and his wife Monique have two daughters, Amari and Anaya.

Drayton's ties to the state of Florida will aid recruiting there in the future, but his lack of experience coaching wideouts is enough to give pause to a final verdict on the hire. Darell Hazell was one of the best wide receivers coaches in the country, and almost any coach would be a downgrade. But with Drayton, Ohio State has hired an experienced coach with a reputation as a great recruiter. He will need no adjustment to big time college football and will bring a different perspective to the staff and players. Wide receiver development is going to be a key next season, especially during the first five games, so Drayton must be technically proficient in teaching skills to the largely young wide receiver corp.  Jim Tressel would not hire him if he was not an excellent teacher along with recruiter, and that's enough evidence to believe this hire is a good one.

It's interesting that Drayton's duties officially begin two days before national signing day. He will need to contact JaJuan Story before then, as no recruit is going to commit to a school without speaking to their position coach first. There's little time for the two to forge a relationship, but Stan Drayton can begin his Buckeye career with a great start if he reels in the big-time wide receiver from Brooksville, Florida.

Hazell can't be replaced without a slight lag.

But this is as close to a perfect hire as we could have hoped. He’s as solid as a recruiter as you can find out there. My only real question is that he’s now a WR coach and he’s always been a RB coach. As far as Story is concerned, this should help as they likely have had conversations in the past during his recruitment to UF. Hopefully the current WR’s on our roster grow with him and we establish a threatening passing attack to complement our traditional, successful running style.

Recruiting is the biggest deal here.

He’s from Florida, he knows how to pull in talent. I think the transition to WR coach shouldn’t be that big of a deal, however OSU has really turned into wide receiver U lately, hopefully this doesn’t change after Hazel.

Santonio Holmes, Michael Jenkins, Brian Robiskie, Brian Hartline, Ted Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez (injuries non-withstanding) all play significant roles on their teams. Posey and Sanzenbacher figure to do the same. I’d say we have a good track record at producing NFL wide receivers.

Reply Fail

The only one that really came to my mind was Holmes. I don’t think any awesome national spotlight has been on Jenkins, Robo, Hartline, Ginn, or Gonzo. A lot of people call Ginn, Gonzo and Robo a bust. I don’t know that you’d tell any recruit, “Hey, you could be the next (inset anyone on that list except Holmes)” and find much success if their goal is to be a NFL impact player.
So I guess I’ll disagree and not call OSU WR U.

I don't think they have to be impact players necessarily.

If you tell a potential recruit, “hey, we’ve had 6 WRs start multiple games in the NFL, and like 9 drafted (Childress, Roy Hall and Drew Carter were all drafted, there are probably some I’m forgetting) since 2003,” then I would think you get their attention.

Idk, agree to disagree.

I do see your points.

And they’re very well received. I just don’t feel we are a WR U caliber school according to any current high school player. Here’s a link that’s a ranking of WR schools according to Scout.

Nice link, that's a very interesting list.

Interesting that Scout used college stats for their rankings, which is the only reason Florida is anywhere near the top. Outside of Percy Harvin every recent Florida WR has been a colossal bust. Gaffney, Anthony, Green, Baker, Caldwell, how many of those guys are still even around? Same goes for MSU and Michigan (excluding Braylon, who at least is a legitimate starter, but not a game changer.)

If Scout went with NFL accolades, with Holmes swapped in for Donley, I can’t see a school on that list outside of USC/Miami that could compete with us (and guys like Swann, Keyshawn and Irvin have been retired for years, not nearly as recent as our crop).

I do agree with you that the perception of OSU isn’t really a WR school, but looking at the recent draft history, maybe it should be?

Who has sent more wide receiver talent to the NFL than Ohio State in the past twenty years? Miami is the only one that comes to mind, but they have a significant dry spell since Andre Johnson.

Well I have never heard anyone call OSU WR U

I just don’t feel any WR recruit would think of our offense and believe this is anywhere near the passing offense I’d like to play in. Here’s a list, it’s decent. Not a lot of current names for us though.

According to the USA Today Draft Database, Ohio State has more first round picks at wide receiver (7) than both Miami (6) and USC (5). Miami’s last was 2003 and USC’s last was 2005.

I cannot think of any other school that could have more than those three in the last two decades. It’s pretty safe to call Ohio State “wide receiver university,” especially with how recent the success has been.

I would love to call Ohio State "wide receiver university"

I simply don’t think most WR recruits would register with that. Hopefully that’ll change as, you’re right, the facts are there.
