2010 Record: Vacated

Offensive Style: Pistol, Power, Maybe?

Ohio State vs. Purdue

Television: B10 Network

Purdue-boilermakers_medium

Purdue Boilermakers (4-5)

Head Coach: Danny Hope

2010 Record: 4-8 (2-6 Big 10)

Offensive Style: Pro-style, Spread Hybrid

Defensive Style: 4-3 Under

Game Notes:

  • J.B. Shugarts is out. It appears true freshman Antonio Underwood will replace him. Shugarts missed snaps in last weekend's game and Underwood stepped in then, as well. It's interesting to note that Underwood got the nod instead of Andrew Norwell, who began the season at left tackle and is now playing left guard.
  • After sitting against Indiana, Jordan Hall will return to the running back mix. Carlos Hyde played well in Hall's absence, so there will be controversy about who receives the excess carries behind Boom Herron.
  • If all goes right, Braxton Miller may not need to complete a single pass for the Buckeyes to win. Purdue has one of the worst, and lightest, defensive lines in the Big Ten, and Ohio State's offensive line should push them around.
  • Likewise, Purdue's offensive line has struggled. While the Bucks lack a pure speed rusher, defensive end Johnny Simon will wreak havoc upon the porous Boilermaker line.
  • Corey "Philly" Brown will not play after injuring his ankle in practice this week.
  • 89% of AtO voters expect the Buckeyes to emerge victorious.

Purdue has desperation going for them. They need 2 of the last 3 to be bowl eligible.

If Bollman doesn’t learn to sometimes pass on 1st and 2nd down, 1st especially, I am going to drive out there and punch him in the crotch. Stop always putting your freshman QB in third and long.

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 12:24 PM EST reply actions

Normally, and in the long-term, I agree. But this is a game where we should run the ball 60 times. Purdue’s front seven is light, and we can wear them down. They’ve had trouble against rushing teams all season.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

True that, but ‘d sure like to see Miller’s confidence built up by sometimes getting to throw when the whole world doesn’t expect it

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

Ross-Ade Stadium has that voodoo.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:31 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Sometimes, Braxton Miller looks foolish when he runs. If he bounces it outside, he has 15 yards.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:33 PM EST reply actions

Slip screens. You think we would have been prepared for them after 2009.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:35 PM EST reply actions

You know, I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw the OSU offense throw a screen. Just realized I see them all the time against us, but we don’t use them much. Can someone with better knowledge than me tell me if screens-either the old standard, bubble, or slip- would work for OSU?

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

This offense reminds me of the Michigan State game.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 12:35 PM EST reply actions

Last week’s was the Michigan State offense, too, except Indiana’s defense sucks.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

TerBush will make a few big mistakes before this game is through.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:41 PM EST reply actions

Bad punt by Webster.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 12:42 PM EST reply actions

Antonio Underwood needs to be switched out. He’s being eaten alive at right tackle.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:44 PM EST reply actions

Saw him whiff on a run block too.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, we’ve got a rhythm going. Let’s take advantage of this.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 12:45 PM EST reply actions

Oh good, we called play 2. I think we only have 4.

TOUCHDOWN JORDAN HALL

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Nice play! Purdue sold out on the blitz, Miller maintained composure.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Our receivers may as well not exist.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:48 PM EST reply actions

Are they just not getting open? Is it play calling? Both?

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

Part of it’s on MIller, part on the playcalls. Still mostly intermediate and vertical routes. Nothing to let him get in rythmn.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

They called a quick-hitter on that last drive. It was to the fullback.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

string a few of those together

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

And to someone other than the plodding fullback.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

That was a cool play. Purdue has put a lot of thought into this gameplan.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:54 PM EST reply actions

Going with lots of misdirection. OSU over pursuing

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:54 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to see us settle into a safe Cover 2.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

lucky to fumble. that had big play potential

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:55 PM EST reply actions

I hate these jail break/slip screens.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 12:55 PM EST reply actions

Purdue’s offensive line is truly bad. A team full of J.B. Shugarts who can’t block.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:56 PM EST reply actions

It’s deceptive though, isn’t it? How many real pass plays has Purdue run so far?’ They’ve mostly been screens and 5-step drops.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

You think OSU would learn with a freshman QB how to call these plays.

by emd2k3 on Nov 12, 2011 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

quick passes, misdirection and rollouts are helping too.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Our plodding dline helps them out.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

hit him in the body

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 12:57 PM EST reply actions

Defensive backs need to work on ball awareness/quick reactions. TerBush has thrown many dangerous passes that were knocked down instead of picked.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 12:57 PM EST reply actions

Love that Christmas commercials have started already. Thanksgiving no longer exists.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:00 PM EST reply actions

Columbus has a radio station that started playing christmas music just after halloween. Shoot me.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, we’ve gotten two defensive stops & a TD drive. Momentum is on our side at the moment. Let’s hope we can keep this going (knock on wood).

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Underwood is doing a good job of helping Miller back up after his guy gets the sack

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Underwood getting killed. Holding on every play.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:02 PM EST reply actions

Get Underwood out of there. Not his fault, he’s just overmatched as a true freshman on the edge. Move Norwell to right tackle and put Linsley at guard.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:03 PM EST reply actions

Coaches should give him help every play.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

HOw much has Joel HAle been in the rotation? I don’t racall him before. Did they burn his redshirt?

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:03 PM EST reply actions

They burned it in the first game, and he’s played intermittently since. Maybe he has earned increased time after a season of practice?

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

2nd and 3 is pretty easy.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:07 PM EST reply actions

I love Ryan Shazier. I think he’s going to be a star

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:09 PM EST reply actions

looked like 1 step to me…

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:09 PM EST reply actions

Not sure that’s as egregious a penalty as the announcer believes. Hankins is 310 pounds. That’s a lot of inertia to stop suddenly.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:10 PM EST reply actions

Our pursuit angles are really bad today

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:10 PM EST reply actions

What horrible tackling.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Screens are killer. Holes open in the run game. No sure tackling. Just bad.

by Cry on Nov 12, 2011 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Back to missing tackles.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 1:11 PM EST reply actions

There’s a good chance we see another slip screen in this situation.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

keep running it until osu stops it

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

haven’t stopped one yet

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:12 PM EST reply actions

A team could throw a screen every down against us and never be stopped.

Week after week and we still can’t figure it out.

Its pretty amazing.

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

They have a good gameplan. We came in thinking “ah, we’ll just run it and our defense is great”.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:14 PM EST reply actions

2 players at the mesh point

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:15 PM EST reply actions

We’ve given up 240-some yards in the first half. Not youthful mistakes, just poor defense.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Not sure what to say.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 1:15 PM EST reply actions

The only good thing right now is that Fickle and Bollman are that much closer to gone

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:16 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

25-yards start, not bad. A field goal is a realistic outcome here.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:17 PM EST reply actions

Wow, a run off guard. Never saw that coming

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:17 PM EST reply actions

It was to set up the 2nd down play-action to the tailback.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Wasn’t that setup by the previous 697 runs off guard on first down?

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

No, this one was very important. Purdue had no idea it was coming.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

This defense is terrible.

How do you let that happen? No pressure, can’t cover, and can’t tackle. And it doesn’t help that they are on the field 2/3 of the game because the offense is inept.

by D-Day77 on Nov 12, 2011 1:18 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Someone please tell me...

How we consistently get 5-star offensive linemen, and give up a million sacks? Miller sits a little long, but the line has got to give him time on some of these dumb passing calls.

by rogerja on Nov 12, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

How does this team get it up for a Nebraska or a Wisconsin, but look inept against Illinois and Purdue? How can a team be so wildly inconsistent? How can adjustments not be made week to week? Terrible coaching. Just plain, pure, terrible coaching.

by Cry on Nov 12, 2011 1:21 PM EST reply actions

OSU has almost always played to the level of its competition.

by emd2k3 on Nov 12, 2011 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

Force a punt, maybe block a kick.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 1:23 PM EST reply actions

Webster hasn’t been punting well at all today.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 1:26 PM EST reply actions

THAT WAS TO A WIDE RECEIVER!

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 1:28 PM EST reply actions

I knew this would be a tough game. Need Miller’s feet in the 2nd half if we hope to come back. Not likely…

by Lesterh on Nov 12, 2011 1:48 PM EST reply actions

How does Purdue have a better coach than Ohio State?

by Lesterh on Nov 12, 2011 1:50 PM EST reply actions

Sweat is out for the second half. Not good.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 1:50 PM EST reply actions

by Lesterh on Nov 12, 2011 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Webster is horrible.

what’s his punting average been today? 30 yards?

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Damnit. If he didn’t stop, he would have had a huge alley to the right.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 1:56 PM EST reply actions

by Lesterh on Nov 12, 2011 1:57 PM EST reply actions

Touchdown Braxton. I’ll take that.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 2:02 PM EST reply actions

by Lesterh on Nov 12, 2011 2:02 PM EST reply actions

PSU isn’t looking too good right now. We MUST come back in this one.

by Lesterh on Nov 12, 2011 2:04 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think they know the score of the Penn State game. Fickell certainly doesn’t.

Vrabel is now the ST coach?….why is he talking to the ST?

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 3:13 PM EST reply actions

Because he is the only coach with a brain

come on basil, what the shit

by joejoekl on Nov 12, 2011 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Have not had a good kicker since Josh Houston.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

I HATE that kind of kick. All your practice is against normal kicks. Squib always seem to give great field position

Johnson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES! HE PICKED IT OFF!

Holy Buckeye TD plz for Miller.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Now they’ll run three times and go to OT, where we’ll lose because we have no offsense

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 3:17 PM EST reply actions

We’ll be fine. We can make some stops. That pick at the end was a killer for them.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

went from +80% chance of winning 21-20 to probably less than 50% in ot

by joejoekl on Nov 12, 2011 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

meant offense, but “offsense” works really well

T.Y. Williams is 6’’5, 245. How do you not truck a defensive back?

They left the shallow cross completely open. That’s on a linebacker.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 3:30 PM EST reply actions

You sure it wasn’t on Johnson on that play?

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think it was on the MIKE, which would have been Klein.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

What the hell are they even reviewing?

I’d say it pretty clearly was a catch, and pretty clearly wasn’t a TD.

by sexsalad on Nov 12, 2011 3:31 PM EST reply actions

Fickell should not get the HC job.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 3:32 PM EST reply actions

Losing to Purdue is unacceptable.

by sexsalad on Nov 12, 2011 3:33 PM EST reply actions

This year's D should be known as...

Only plays 3.5 quarters.

It’s tough to think that a blocked extra point cost this team the game.

by njny on Nov 12, 2011 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Especially since Ben had never missed an XP before this.

by MediBuck on Nov 12, 2011 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

Well, look at the bright side…at least we don’t have to hear anymore ’Maybe Fickell should stay" rumblings. That was very frightening to me.

by jonnyphoenix on Nov 12, 2011 3:37 PM EST reply actions

+156. I once more take solace in knowing Bollman and Fickle are that much closer to gone.

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

There’s a rumbling that Urban Meyer has agreed to the job and Fickell has agreed to stay as Assistant Head Coach. It’s coming from someone generally accepted as an insider, too.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

I’m okay with Fickle staying in a lesser capacity. He’s out of his depth, but he’s not an idiot. I want Bollman gone though.

by cplunk on Nov 12, 2011 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Would you be ok with that?

I am.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 12, 2011 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Tyler, I respect you as an elder on the boards. Where did you get this info and is it really a possibility or just a manifestation of our greedy chubby-cheeked wet dreams?

It’s from Scout.

by Tyler T. on Nov 12, 2011 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

I have no problem with fickell staying on in some capacity, just not as head coach.

by jonnyphoenix on Nov 12, 2011 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

burned on every roll out play all day.

No pressure, terrible coverage, bad tackling, losing yardage on first down, predictable play calling, poor throws, and sacks = losing to fucking Purdue. Get Bollman and Fickel the fuck out of there, and take Gene Smith with them.

by D-Day77 on Nov 12, 2011 3:42 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions

Excused.

I felt exactly the way you did inside. Gene Smith and Bollman need to be put in a retirement home somewhere. They’ve both proven that that type of ineptitude has no place at OSU.
