Around SBN: New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI Ring Unveiled

Urban Meyer has allegedly agreed to become the next coach at OSU.

At least according to Sports by Brooks. Supposedly he has agreed in principle to the job, but nothing has been made official yet through any sort of contract.

Excerpt after the jump.

Star-divide

The deal between Meyer and Ohio State was consumated in principle earlier this week in Columbus but not signed. It includes a multi-year contract that will make Meyer once again one of college football’s highest paid coaches.

In additon to Meyer’s generous compensation package, sources said a major factor in the coach’s decision to agree to take the position was the school promising him the budget to assemble what is expected to become the highest-paid assistant coaching staff in college football history.

Apparently he plans to keep Fickell and Drayton on the staff in addition to adding (among others) Chris Spielman and Kirk Herbstreit.

Of course, until the contract is signed there's nothing set in stone, but I'd feel much better having Meyer at the helm than Fickell, as would (I'd imagine) all of you.

This would be very interesting. Specifically because Herbstreit is almost an institution on Gameday and Spielman has made a very good career as an announcer.

The cynic in me would say that ESPN would just have a few more reasons to hate on us since we would be hiring 2 of their top talents away.

Urban denied this last night

But this rumor has been swirling around campus for the last couple months. I honestly would not be shocked if he was the head coach, but Herbstreit isn’t leaving ESPN. Spielman might, but Herbstreit? Hell no…

Denial in principle?

I could see Spielman…apparently he and Urb are hanging out together. I could see that. No way on Herbstreit. Also, what Urban is denying isn’t really necessarily a ‘denial’

corrrect. All he said is that he hasn’t been offered nor has he accepted the job.

That doesn’t mean he hasn’t had discussion about it. And I am sure during these discussions, both sides agreed to state that he had not been offered the job.

Right. Tentative discussions can be construed as just that…and not a formal ‘offer.’

Its like a strawman response:

“Have you been offered the job at OSU?”

“I haven’t interviewed for the job at OSU…”

I donno about the Herbstreit and Spielman rumors. I think that’s starting to get closer to “somebody said something”l than and actual rumor with legs.
I hope he keeps Heacock at DC though.

I’d be shocked if he kept Heacock.
Does anyone know the last time Sports by Brooks was way off on a statement? From my memory, they’re usually spot on over there.

Sports By Brooks

Generally throws whatever rumor has any shred of credibility against the wall and then takes credit for what sticks.

SBB was brutal during the entire Cam Newton scandal and will say ANYTHING if it gets him 5 more hits on his website..

He has good info from time to time, just be sure to take what he says with a grain of salt..

Scout’s Bill Greene is reporting Urban Meyer and Ohio State have reached a deal:
