Penn State Nittany Lions (8-2)

Head Coach: Tom Bradley

2010 Record: 7-6 (4-4 Big 10)

Offensive Style: I-Formation, Run Heavy

Defensive Style: 4-3 Over, Cover 3

Game Notes:

  • As if there were any doubt, Mike McQueary remains on administrative leave and will not travel with the NIttany Lions to Columbus.
  • Ryan Shazier will start in place of Andrew Sweat. The true freshman flies around and makes plays, but he also makes mistakes. It will be interesting to see how he holds up.
  • J.B. Shugarts may play, but his status is still uncertain. One thing is clear, true freshman Antonio Underwood cannot start in his place again. Against Purdue's mediocre defensive line, Underwood was a sieve. Against Penn State's talented defensive line, the results will be worse.
  • After leaving last weekend's game with an injury, defensive tackle Johnathon Hankins is back.
  • DeVier Posey returns. Our passing game is rudimentary and ineffective, but Posey's presence can do nothing but improve it.

This is going to be an ugly, low-scoring game.

Tyler, do you have insight as to why we like to line Big Hank up as a DE on early downs? It seems like they like a certain set of DL personnel on the field against the run but wouldn’t it make more sense to put one of the smaller guys outside and Hank inside?

My guess here, Penn State likes to run outside zone and stretch, so Heacock/Fickell wanted the best run defenders on the outside.

Also, Hankins may be the second best pass-rusher on this team now, with Nathan Williams’ injury.

by Tyler T. on Nov 19, 2011 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

…and of course they are lining him up inside now.

Actually, after looking at it some more, they might be setting Simon to the weakside and having the other three shift left or right as needed to set the front. Simon flips, and the other three just scoot left or right, so SDE and the weakside DT are more or less the same position. Hank looks to be in that position to me.

Cmon guys, that’s a direct snap to the back. Gotta expect run and untouched up the middle isn’t going to cut it.

Too early to tell, but I’m afraid this team has quit.

by Tyler T. on Nov 19, 2011 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

I can see how they would be disappointed, but they still have so much to play for. If only their own careers, I would think they would be giving their all.

Looks like it was Shazier’s youth that was the problem on that play, two 3-techs in the formation and he stayed with the outside option (looked like the SS had the outside run lane to me) instead of going inside.

And if Fickell has already lost this team, why don’t we just hire Urban right away?

There have been some rumblings that exactly that plan is being considered. We may see a self-instituted bowl ban this season, and an immediate Meyer hiring.

by Tyler T. on Nov 19, 2011 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

I’m game. I am not in love with Urban’s style but there’s no doubt that it works for him at the highest level of college football when he can recruit bigtime talent (which he should be able to do).

If we’re going to do it this season, the earlier the better in my mind.

PSU is on an emotional high right now. On the road, after all this craziness is passing. Bucks need to hang with them and wait for them to fade.

I just don’t understand the lack of improvement from week to week. With a few exceptions we seem to stay static or get worse while every other team improves. Miller has gotten better in some ways, Roby has improved at corner throughout the year, a few others, but overall its like they don’t hold practice during the week.

by cplunk on Nov 19, 2011 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t know. Like you said, the physical limitations become a bigger issue in the NFL, but I have to think his slipperiness will still apply.

by Tyler T. on Nov 19, 2011 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

He is a slightly faster version of Ben Jarvis Green Ellis in the NFL. A starter on a good passing team.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Nov 19, 2011 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think he will not be an early round pick, but every team could use him as a 3rd down type of back if he can protect. He’s pretty good at catching the ball, and he has very good vision. He’s not going to be all that fast in the NFL and he isn’t going to be all that big in the NFL, but I think he’s got enough speed and size to play.

Another situation where I think he could fit would be as the second back in a zone scheme. Those teams love backs who have good vision and don’t waste time getting downhill and fighting for a couple of yards after contact. I think Herron can do that.

by Tyler T. on Nov 19, 2011 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t mind it if you have some sort of built in comebacks on the outside, but there’s no way this offense can execute that. Why not just call something medium and to the sideline? Slot outs, some sort of flood or deep comeback, something to get closer?

"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein

by rufio on Nov 19, 2011 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

No, it was three routes all on the right side. Fields got caught up and couldn’t run his pattern and that meant everybody was jammed up since the routes were so close. Fairly sure the idea was to leave the left open for Miller to scramble (shocker)

by cplunk on Nov 19, 2011 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Are you sure there was no WR to the bottom of the screen? I’ve never heard of 3 verticals being run as the only patterns on one side of the field.

by Brutus89 on Nov 19, 2011 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah it does kind of screw you over, but not as bad as the clock running out in that situation

"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein

by rufio on Nov 19, 2011 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

…no, it runs the clock for another 10 seconds. With 30 seconds left in the 4th down 6 on offense and facing a winding clock I would take an intentional false start and 5 yard loss to stop the clock every time.

If there aren’t rules like this, coaches would intentionally cheat and go against the “spirit of the game” all the time.

I actually haven’t been keeping with the Browns at all this season. What’s the consensus amongst the fans?

by Tyler T. on Nov 19, 2011 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

It’s pretty hard to watch sometimes. With Steinbach out our guards are not good at getting to the 2nd level on ZB plays (i’d say near 50% of our runs) and they pretty consistently miss assignments in pass pro. RT has been a revolving door, with Pashos the best when healthy but not above average,

Peyton Hillis = drama + injuries. And he’s our best skill player. Other backs are not able to run against a stacked box. Many of the WRs can’t separate against tight Man-1, and although the camera angle is too tight to say this with any consistency I’ve seen them run man routes vs. zone and vice versa.

Colt keeps me back and forth between “give him another year” and “we’ve got to draft a QB in the first ASAP.” One week he’ll throw great deep passes 55+ yards downfield, the next he won’t even set himself up to succeed pre-snap and he’s hitching 4 times before he tries to scramble. The ball doesn’t come out quick enough because NFL defenses do all that walking around and he is 2 seconds behind in his reads. Pressure means his footwork gets sloppy and he gets inaccurate.

Defense has been a pleasant surprise. Haden is developing really well and he’s only had one bad half against Brandon Lloyd. Ward had a compound dislocation of his pinky (i.e. bone broke through the skin) they popped it back in, and he kept playing.

D’Qwell Jackson is having a pro bowl caliber year. He’s still the fastest defender in terms of figuring out where the play is headed, but Jauron has turned him loose to run blitz A gaps when he smells run and he’s getting the “impact plays” that many criticized him for lacking in the 3-4. Same high tackle totals, many more stuffs and TFLs, sacks.

Rubin and Taylor are adjusting to the 4-3. Both are quicker and better at shooting gaps than I thought they’d be, but weaker holding the POA against double teams and clogging the middle than I thought (though I set that bar pretty high). Sheard has been getting pretty consistent pressure, while Mitchell, the OLBs, and the other secondary players are meh.

People have mostly hated Shurmur. We’ve “found ways to lose” and played sloppier than under Mangini, but we’ve also been a little more aggressive on offense. Special teams are way worse from last year. I like the offense that they want to run much more than Daboll’s but results are not all that much better. Apparently people hate Shurmur in press conferences. He tries to be more open with the media, but there’s always going to be coachspeak when there’s openness and people don’t seem to get that.
