What does the future look like for the Buckeyes?
With the last 2 victories over top B1G Ten contenders (or pretenders yet to be determined) there is a sense of hope for a successful season for the Buckeyes. Is this good? Yes, of course it is. But think for a minute. Are you satisfied with the way things have been for the last 10 years? The average fan screams out YES!!!! One National Title and 7 B1G Ten titles were great!! But I see what could have been. Every year except for 2001 and 2004 should have ended with Ohio State playing for National Titles. The talent on the field those years was second to none. Why did they loose? Coaching - conservative/predictable play calling, the inability to teach basic skills to quarterbacks, getting the team ready to play, and, and I could go on and on. Ever since Tressel was hired the philosophy has been; don't loose it on offense and for the defense to keep the game close and play un-aggressive with the lead. This statement does not hold true for the Michigan games however. For some reason there was always an aggressive schema for those games. I don't understand why it worked for Michigan but not for everyone else???
This year is no different. The defense was young but they found their legs. The offense is same ole same ole with a wrinkle every once in a while. Will the better than average chances of playing for the B1G Ten championship retain the services of the current coaching staff? If this is the case the future will most certainly be ok, better than average even. But what if Ohio State were able to get a coach that can teach QBs, that will be aggressive, that will be unpredictable in play calling. Can you imagine the possibilities? Games that the defense can run mad in the 4th quarter. Games that first and 10 doesn't mean run of tackle. No more games that are still in doubt even though OSU is up by 2 scores in the 4th quarter with 5 minutes to go. Am I wrong? Should I be happy with just winning games they should and loosing the ones they shouldn't. I would love to see a coach who could have this team play up to their full potential. A coach who can adjust to the talent he has on both sides of the ball. I like Fickell but I think he has his hands tied by Gene Smith or he has been an understudy of Tressel for to long to be as aggressive as this team needs to be.
Another thing is the recruiting team for "The Ohio State University" should be embarrassed. This is the first year I can remember that the state of Ohio was out recruited by Michigan over the Bucks. This may be due to tat-gate and the pending NCAA ruling, but why commit to Michigan. The team referred to in most of Ohio as "Team up North" for fear of some mocking or physical attack (kidding, a smack on the back of the head at most). Or why even commit at all. Wait to see what happens with the NCAA. I think they are all tired of the run and punt too. If this doesn’t change the Bucks may be looking up at B1G Ten titles rather than getting sized for rings.

I don’t want a fancy gimmick style of offense either(pistol/option are gimmicks too). A pro style that reacts to and dictates a defense is what I want. With the talent of the athletes accross the country it is hard to run when everyone knows your going to run. That is what I am tired of.
Any offense that uses scheme rather than skill to beat a defense. An offense that would not work consistently in the NFL. I know that sometimes these styles are needed based on tallent level you have but if that is all you ever run and never change you will never get the athletes you want.
Ok, so shouldn’t you want both then, good skill and scheme that emphasizes it? The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
I understand your point but it differs from what I am trying to say. Just winning sometimes isn’t enough. Sometimes it is how you win that makes the difference. The ability to run in a QB is nice but you need to fear his arm more. Not the case at Ohio State and never will be unless the offensive coordinator and QB coach are gone.
Let me rethink this....
As a head coach you need to be in every game. Luke Fickell is not a head coach. His lack of control over his coordinators is pathetic or even worst case, he agrees with what they are doing/calling. I don’t know but either way Ohio State is and will continue to be in trouble unless the coaching staff and athletic staff are gone. I am tired of seeing superior athletes get beat up by pathetic teams. I despised “Tressel Ball” but let me make it perfectly clear, Tressel wouldn’t be 6-4 this year with 2 to play. This team of coaches is terrible and need to be unemployed. Need to look at good, none spread option, offensive coaches: Steve Sarkisian, Mike Bobo, or even Paul Chryst.
