Ohio State 2011 National Signing Day Central

Who will pass through these gates as Ohio State Buckeyes next season?

UPDATE: Curtis Grant has committed to Ohio State!- COMMITMENT STORY LINK

It's finally National Signing Day. 364 days of effort will lead to payoffs for coaching staffs across the country. For some, the day will end with dreams of national championships. For others, it will end with disappointment for what could have been. And every fanbase will live and die with the reports of 18 year old kids signing flimsy pieces of paper tying them to their school of choice.

The SportsBlog Nation platform is excellent for live-updating events like these, and we're using this page as a centralized hub for all Ohio State and national recruiting information that breaks. Smith1 may not be with us today because he lost electricity last night. I don't know if Ross did, as well, but he is planning to drop in whenever he can. I will be here as much as possible to pass along information and update the letter-of-intent table. Please feel free to drop along anything you're reading and hearing in the comments section.

Just below this you will find a chart that details each member of the class and their current status. We'll be updating it as soon as we hear where they've signed, or for current commits, when they've faxed in their letter-of-intents. Commitment stories will be LINKED in this thread, but will not be broadcast on the front page until later in the day. We want to consolidate the action in here, so there's no confusion over what's taking place. Just park yourself in this thread and we'll keep you updated.

Hit the jump for everything we know about today. We're passing along the latest that others are reporting and everything we've been told. Expect a lot of action early.

Note: Please adjust your screen setting to "Wide" on the sidebar. It will help you view the chart.

12:00 P.M. UPDATE

Here is where things stand with some of the key individuals we are following today:

Ohio State is already moving on 2012 recruits. They've just offered Minnesota OT Jonah Pirsigh, who now holds offers from OSU, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Breaking News: OL recruit Chris Carter Arrested. So it turns out Carter wasn't delayed by the weather, but by his overnight stay in a Cleveland jail cell.

--Aundrey Walker--USC

--Ejuan Price--OSU

Targets Yet To Sign

Hit the jump for the latest info on Curtis Grant, Aundrey Walker, Ejuan Price, and Darius Jennings.

What we know:

  • It does not look good for Aundrey Walker. All three Ohio State recruiting sites have switched their prediction to USC, and Ted Ginn Sr., the head coach at Glenville, has informed at least one of the websites that they should not bother covering Glenville's Signing Day this year. That's bad. The only way this works out for Ohio State is if Walker is playing a game with everyone, including his head coach. The odds of that are not high.
  • After receiving some news yesterday, I'm 99.99% sure that Curtis Grant will be a Buckeye. Florida is not even an option right now. Will Muschamp and Grant never clicked, and Grant's parents were more comfortable with the three other head coaches of his finalists (Butch Davis, Mike London, and Jim Tressel) than Muschamp. But the clincher was Grant's relationship with Jim Tressel. They clicked on the official visit and Ohio State has been the team to beat ever since.
  • As of this morning, Ejuan Price is still committed to Ohio State. Beyond that, we know nothing. Price has cut off contact with all recruiting analysts and, at least for a time, the Ohio State coaching staff. We don't know where he will sign, but it's not a good omen that he broke off contact with the Buckeyes so close to signing day.
  • Ron Tanner should be the first recruit to send in his letter of intent (L.O.I) Tanner plays in the Team USA vs the World high school all-star game later in the day and is getting up early to send in his L.O.I.
  • It's unclear whether the coaches have sent a L.O.I. to JaJuan Story. The staff is limited by the Big Ten in the number they can send out, so they won't waste any if they don't feel they have a shot with a recruit.
  • Ohio State coaches HAVE sent a L.O.I. to Darius Jennings. Even though his interest in the Buckeyes has been muted for much of the recruiting process, the coaches think they have enough of a chance with Jennings to warrant sending a L.O.I. to him.
  • Keep the name Drew Kaser in mind. He's a punter from Walsh Jesuit, and the Buckeyes have asked him to delay sending in his L.O.I. to Texas A&M. If the Buckeyes lose out on some prospects, he could get a last minute offer, literally.

The Midwest Blizzard has shut down a number of schools in Ohio. Some recruits may not be able to fax in their L.O.I.s at their school, so they can either search for alternate fax machines (homes, Kinkos, FedEx, etc.) or sign the document, scan it, and then e-mail it to Ohio State, or whatever school they choose. There's a hitch, though.

From someone who knows the intricacies of the L.O.I. more than me: some scan & email. Usually you FedEx the paperwork so you can track it got there. They fax it back so it can be certified by compliance office (only then can media relations or coaches talk about the kids) and the kids send back (via return FedEx) the original paperwork to the school.

If there's a snag with the paperwork, Ohio State coaches will not be able to discuss the recruits until it works itself out. That could affect the annual press conference Coach Tressel holds to announce the signing class. Beyond that, it looks like all systems are a go. Enjoy the ride.

Not looking good on Walker but a night’s sleep may have changed his mind from USC.

Probably not. Walker was supposedly sold on USC by Ed Orgeron. But there may be more to the story than we know. Keep hope alive.

God willing.

I’m not exactly sure about this: how many people does Ohio State have room for, assuming Walker is out of the fold? Three, four, five?

Ann Arbor is a trollop.

by Semicorrect on Feb 2, 2011 7:58 AM EST up reply actions

As many as it takes. The roster has more flexibility than we know right now. Some walk-ons are on scholarship that can be taken off and there will be transfers. We could see OSU take five today if it’s the right guys.

Big Name Changes

Here are a few guys unrelated to OSU who have changed commitments:

—Jalen Grimble a 5 star DT went from USC to Miami, big pick up for Golden and the Canes.

—The big one: 4 star OL Jake Fisher commits to Oregon over Michigan. A big loss for UM.

by Ross Fulton on Feb 2, 2011 8:47 AM EST reply actions

Jeoffray Pagan commits to Alabama. Was committed to UF, then Clemson, and was rumored to Georgia. Recruiting is crazy.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 9:25 AM EST reply actions

I was told early this morning that Delvon Simmons is an option for OSU. Bill Greene of Scout now saying he’s heard the same. I doubt it, though. Simmons has never even visited.

We’re just glad people are paying attention. Signing Day has increased the site exposure a bunch. Our site numbers have been through the roof this week.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

good, glad to hear about big uptick in traffic; IMHO, ATO is the best OSU site for recruiting news with your great links articles.

Love those. Nice to be able to just glance at the headlines or go into as much depth as the links will allow.

Any more details (or a link) on the B1G Ten rules on LOI?

That was very interesting what you wrote above about the B10 limiting the number of LOI that can be sent. Any more details on that? or a link to an article. Weirdly, I have always just figured that all the kids had some sort of blank form; they filled it out; faxed it in. That is, I figured the limit was on receiving them, not giving them out.

What, for example, is the limit on the number tOSU can send out?

by WarBuck46410 on Feb 2, 2011 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I’ll look for one when I have time, but there’s a limit on the number sent out because of the possible number that can be received. I believe the Big Ten allows for 3-5 more than the team has open spots.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

5 star linebacker Tony Steward has committed to Clemson over FSU. Just crazy. Steward was viewed as a lock to FSU for 6 months.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:15 AM EST reply actions

wow, Clemson? Is Steward from S.Car.?

FWIW and apropos of nothing, my Dad grew up in S.Car. and is a big Gamecocks fan. Thus, Steward to Clemson will get him ticked off; and, btw, Dad’s holding out hope for Clowney. I just nod and go “Game-whats” and ask politely: “they play football at S.Car?” LOL

I go to Clemson. I lived in Cleveland until I was 13. I still root for OSU (which is why I’m here), but I’m obviously a Clemson fan. I’m just glad that they never play each other!

Tyler: thoughts on C. Jones?

maybe i missed something — well and clearly i did — but last I heard we were not going to offer him. I know he’s going to wait a year, but aren’t there supposedly great QBs in the 2012 class of Ohio highschoolers, etc.

That one surprised me.

by WarBuck46410 on Feb 2, 2011 10:24 AM EST reply actions

I put this in the Updates, but I’ll repost it here:

Cardale Jones is going to Prep School before Ohio State. He’ll have the chance to end up where he’s always wanted to be. It’s on him now.

OSU will probably still recruit a QB in 2012. They can’t rely on Cardale to get his grades together. It’s a win-win for OSU, as long as it does not affect 2012 recruiting.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Doing some checking, but I’m not the only one that has heard the name Delvon Simmons. I still don’t but it, but that’d be insane to pull off at the last minute.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:29 AM EST reply actions

According to Scout, Walker confirmed to So. Cal.

LINK: http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1045141.html

I think it is okay to quote them here (if not, please let me know). The article says in part:

"The Trojans also benefited from Walker’s recent official visit, which coincided with his 18th birthday.

"That night we had a little kick back, a little party for my birthday," Walker said. "We had a great time. L.A. is great man. The coaches showed me a lot of love."

WOW…. my naughty imagination is just spinning on what that “Birthday Party” was. Btw, what’s the legal drinking age in California? anyone know?

So, now we know the secret: OSU needs to start throwing “Birthday Parties.”

by WarBuck46410 on Feb 2, 2011 10:37 AM EST reply actions

Another trick: After his official visit, Ed Orgeron accompanied Walker on the flight back to Cleveland to conduct a school visit. USC’s staff is filled with high pressure salesmen.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

Are there any “shocker” commits to OSU? Sorry I don’t follow recruiting much until around this time.

by emily522 on Feb 2, 2011 10:42 AM EST reply actions

Jones was a bit of a surprise. There are some rumblings about Delvon Simmons, a surprise defensive tackle. No confirmation there, though.

The big fish is still Curtis Grant, the #2 ranked played in the country by Rivals. OSU got in the game late on him but may lead.

Guys, the signing day breakfast was pushed back in Austin, but everything is getting back on track. Lots of guys walking around in their hats, etc. Notre Dame guys will be first when the actual ceremony begins. As a matter of fact it is getting ready to get underway.

- From Greg Powers.

Ron Tanner and Michael Bennett are at the event. Bennett is faxed but I don’t know when Tanner will get the chance. They are losing electricity.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 10:58 AM EST reply actions

Simmons looks good; Pennsylvania kid; maybe wants to stay a bit closer to home; maybe not so high on Florida now with new coaches

and OR and So. Cal. are far away.

Scout has him as a 5*; shows No. Car., Pitt, Rutgers, Oregon and TexTech (but not Florida) on his List. If he wants to stay local, tOSU better than Pitt and Rutgers, IMHO.

Would be a big “get” for Tress & Staff.

O.K, some national round-up and rumors:

- Cyrus Koundjou, 5 star tackle long rumored to Alabama, may be going to Auburn. Mike Farrell of Rivals is reporting that the chatter is Auburn right now.

- FSU coaches think they have Tim Jernigan.

- Jermauria Rasco has been a silent commitment to Texas, FSU, and Florida over the past year. He silently committed to Muschamp on his Gator visit over the weekend. Where is he signing? The home state LSU Tigers.

- De’Anthony Thomas, 5 star CB/RB who has been committed to USC for 7 months, is going to flip to Oregon.

So does anyone remember a movie in the 80s called Johnny B Goode? Starred Michael Anthony Hall as a prized QB high school recruit that went to 3-4 different school visits.

Wonder if Hollywood would tempt a semi remake showing recruiting in the present day and age.

All that means next to nothing on the field.

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert

by Simmsinns on Feb 2, 2011 1:57 PM EST reply actions

I’d love to see those statistics. There had have to be a constant year differential from the #1 ranking to the time they won.

I think what you’re saying here is a massive overstatement, because there are countless factors that go into winning a national championship, as well as making these recruits, however many stars they’re rated at, into elite college level players.

They matter, at least as far as general tiers. Ross is going to get into it in a post after NSD.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Really? You think that ESPN’s, Scout’s, or Rivals’ rankings of the school’s recruiting classes actually matters?

I’m talking about those outlets’ opinions of which schools did the best job. I want to clarify, I’m not referring to any particular outlet’s scouting of any given players, just their opinions of which school’s are ranked where, 1 through 10, 1 through 25 or whatever it may be.

Can you briefly summarize why these rankings matter?

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert

by Simmsinns on Feb 2, 2011 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

They correlate to wins and player success. It’s documented.

Part I
Part II

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

I’m going to dismiss the first article as it’s referring to individual star ratings, which isn’t what I’m talking about.

I read the second article, and I’m not buying it as definitive evidence that (insert ESPN/Scout/Rivals)‘s rankings of teams really matter at all, (i.e. 1. Bama, 2. Auburn, 3. Fl St., ect.) What I see is a very loose correlation between the average of the last 5 years of ranked classes and comparing it to a given year’s AP ranking.

The results are: Perennial powerhouses recruit well. Shocker. Seriously though, my point is that there are countless other factors that go into a college team’s success that unfathomably more important than being ranked 3rd instead of 4th in the 2011 recruiting class rankings brought to by ESPN/Scout/Rivals.

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert

by Simmsinns on Feb 2, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

They are so overstated.

Scout, Rivals, ESPN all have such different rankings. How can “experts” have such different findings in the same field of research…such a waste of time. Opinion cannot count as data.

There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you.

by Culp's Freaking Hill on Feb 2, 2011 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

it’s due to a bias by region, the best one at avoiding that has usually been Scout in my opinion.

by Pariahwulfen on Feb 2, 2011 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

any thoughts about why ESPN went to a number system? (other than just to distinguish themselves).

the star system is … um … well, traditional and we are all used to it.

ESPN’s rankings convey very little information to me. What is the difference between a 76 and a 77? seriously? I mean, obviously, I like the ESPN system better if only because they consistently give tOSU a higher ranking than the other two. But honestly I can’t make heads or tails of their numbers.

by WarBuck46410 on Feb 2, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

It’s all based on scouting as well, which is essentially guessing based on observation, but guessing nonetheless.

It takes a lot of coaching and hard work from everyone involved to get them to the players to play at a high level, and then to have the team win at a high level.

What is the difference between a 76 and a 77 right now, especially come 2-3 years from now when they are starters? NOTHING.

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert

by Simmsinns on Feb 2, 2011 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Lol.

Grant is No. 2 overall for Rivals and No. 46 for ESPN. How does that even happen? How can they differ 44 spots? Same for Braxton, Scout has him as the No. 2 overall player and Rivals has him in the mid 40s. Bizarre.

Interesting. Something that drastic may because the high ranking is referring to a certain position specifically while the lower is referring to overall?

Either way, the disparity between all the different rankings is definitely more evidence that they don’t really matter much.

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert

by Simmsinns on Feb 2, 2011 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I thought, but they're both overall. I think Rivals, Scout, Espn, etc. value certain positions differently.

Each have similar position rankings, but their overall rankings are very different.

My signature describes a loss of optimism that happened to be unwarranted. As in, I’m no longer optimistic for what ever reason.

In it’s original context, Dilbert (the character from the comic strip), was saying it in reference to the new year, 2011, and how he released his optimism for 2010 was completely unwarranted.

I put it as my signature in reference to the Cleveland Browns, and how I had lost my optimism through the regime change, and this too was unwarranted in the first place anyhow.

My question to you, how is it, my lack of optimism described in the signature (I was referring to the Browns, but even in any case) relevant here?

O.k. here’s the plan for the rest of the day. I’m going to put up the Grant story in a minute. At 4 p.m., Jim Tressel has his annual press conference to discuss the class. We’re going to use this thread as a way to update you to what he’s saying, but we’ll have a story to run either tonight or tomorrow with a wrap up of quotes/info.

I’m going to link the Grant story to this thread right now, and we’ll put it on the front page tonight. We want to still keep this page as the central info source.

however, only giving you 99 out of 100 for being a bit sneaky and saying “biggest Signing Day success” for Tress. It’s true, of course, but only because Pryor waited until after Signing Day.

I prefer to think of it as: “recently, Tress now has a record of pulling in at least one top-two-ranked recruit every two years.” LOL

Wacky story from down south.

CB Floyd Raven sent in his LOI to Ole Miss today, but he didn’t sign the papers— but his mother did. She forged his signature to lock him in to Ole Miss, and when he found out about it he contacted Ole Miss and told them he’s going to Texas A&M.

great article by Hinton over at RIivals/Yahoo. RichRod is doing Signing Day commentary and CBS Sports puts Brady Hoke on the phone. Priceless

There is embedded video of the segment… funny and awkward. Bet RichRod wanted to punch someone.

best is at the end when Rodriguez asks about facilities upgrades and Hoke says yes yes, they are great and then adds there is no excuse for MI not to succeed everytime it takes the field. ZING!!!

also love Hinton’s footnote saying, for guys, National Signing Day is the equivalent of the soap operas that women watch. LOL

We’ll have a story on the press conference later, but here are some tidbits from Twitter and other sources:

Ohio State had 30 official visits and 23 signees. “That’s a good batting average,” Tressel said.
Jim Bollman on OL recruit Tommy Brown “Pretty good bowler. First time I ever recruited a guy who’s a bowler”
Bollman said he wanted to sign 4-5 linemen in this class. Said he is a little short at the moment, “but see how things evolve.”
All offensive linemen in this class have an opportunity to reach 2-deep as freshmen, Bollman said.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 4:23 PM EST reply actions

Peterson: Vannett is a tall, lanky player that loves to play the game and can block and is good out in space.
Heuerman: Tight ends have two jobs, “catching and blocking.” Note how catching came first.
Heuerman: Tight ends have two jobs, “catching and blocking.” Note how catching came first.

Bollman on Antonio Underwood:

Camp veteran with us. Another powerful guy. Going to be a big guy. Has played both ways. … mostly offense this year.

These guys will give us a lot of depth immediately. All very strong guys."
New #OSU assistant Stan Drayton is currently staying with his father, who lives in Westerville.
Siciliano: Miller knows he has to get north and south as fast as he can. Has great leadership ability.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Siciliano said that they didn’t have a hard time convincing Cardale Jones to greyshirt. Just want separation from Miller, other QBs.
Siciliano: Miller “can really throw the football.” But he needs to catch onto schemes to help #OhioState early.
Stan Drayton is the only coach wearing a tie today. Sounded like coaches told him to wear it as a part of a prank. Drew some laughs.
Drayton noticed that Devin Smith made plays at the WR position in high school. Ability to make plays when needed is big for being successful.
Cleveland native Stan Drayton “I always had the dream of coming back to Ohio State. I just didn’t know if it would happen.”

Drayton on the wide receivers: “They’re hungry. Posey (@Dpo8) is in my office every day wanting to learn.”

Drayton:

“I’m a Buckeye at heart. I used to go to Jim Tressel’s camps.”

Heacock said Chase Farris could play inside for the #Buckeyes a little bit, particulalry on nickel downs if need be.
Heacock said he thinks Steve Miller is “going to be a dominant” football player for #OhioState.

by Tyler T. on Feb 2, 2011 4:32 PM EST reply actions

Jim Heacock rewound play of DE Steve Miller snapping back head of HS fullback with hit, Heacock said he watched that play 25 Xs in office

Joel Hale:

“Outstanding player. Also very versatile. Gets off the ball well. Was a very active player.” said he’s done a great job in the weight room. Said he could play inside also.
Hayes: lauds his basketball talent. “He’s tough, physical and he can run. Gives us another pass-rusher off the edge.”
Fickell said they thought they may get 2 LBs in this class. Too many good players to turn away, though.
Bennett: “He’s got great explosion. He really fits that toughness category. He gets penetration. Gives a nice push inside.” said his arm is going to be fine and is healing up well. Described him as an inside guy.

Fickell on Price:

“Not a huge, oversized tall guy but a guy who is very powerful.”
