2011 NCAA Tournament: Sunday, March 27th Open Thread

If the sight of a basketball still disgusts you today, you're not alone. But the tournament does continue. The final pair of Elite Eight games tip-off a day after Butler and Connecticut locked up two of the Final Four openings.

Southwest Region final, San Antonio:
No. 1 Kansas vs. No. 11 VCU, 2 p.m. ET

Preview from Kansas City Star:

Joey Rodriguez is a small, fast point guard in the mold of former Kansas State guard Denis Clemente. Bradford Burgess and Brandon Rozzell are both capable of getting hot. VCU’s guards will have to play with no fear against KU.

In four games since returning to the starting lineup, Tyshawn Taylor has 23 assists and 11 turnovers. Brady Morningstar’s confidence is through the roof after an 18-point showing against Richmond, and Josh Selby appears to be coming out of his funk after making three three-pointers Friday.

East Region final, Newark:
No. 4 Kentucky vs. No. 2 UNC, 4:55 p.m. ET

Preview from Carolina March:

In the end, this game comes down to which team has matured more in the last few months, and I think that's UNC. In addition to Barnes' offensive blossoming, he's come alive on defense, shutting down players like Kyle Singler. And of course, there's Kendall Marshall, who plays on an entirely different level from the guy who was running the point the last time the Wildcats saw the Heels. Carolina's coming off of one of their better performances this year, and they should be able to keep the momentum and make it to another Final Four.

I really hope VCU can carry this into the second half. I didn’t give them much of a chance coming into this game, but they’ve blown me away thus far. The 3 pt shooting is insane, fun as hell to watch too.

The announcers mentioned fatigue being an issue now, and I think we’re seeing that along with Kansas’ panicked burst. The Jayhawks have closed the gap and it’s going down to the final minutes.

2011 Buckeye commitment Shannon Scott is a lot like Joey Rodriguez.

I want to know when Josh Harrellson turned into a scoring machine.

Not that it’ll happen, but I almost feel better having lost when we did, because I have a sneaky suspicion this is the year Butler or VCU wins the whole enchilada and I would not want to be the Big 6 school that loses to them in the title game.
