Jim Tressel Press Conference: Anecdotes and Observations

This afternoon's annual interview with Jim Tressel to open spring practice was the media's first opportunity to speak with Tressel since his press conference with Gordon Gee and Gene Smith.  As one may expect, many media members took the opportunity to quiz Tressel surrounding 'tattoo gate.'  And, as one may expect, little news was made in this type of press conference, with the primary exception being the announcement that Luke Fickell was named associate head coach and interim coach for those games in which Tressel is suspended.  We'll start with that announcement and cover several other tidbits.

Luke Fickell has been promoted to assistant head coach for Ohio State football, Gene Smith, associate vice president and director of athletics, announced today. In that role, he will serve as interim head coach for the first five games of the Buckeyes’ 2011 season. He will also retain his role as linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.

"Luke Fickell is a Buckeye to the core. He has earned this promotion to assistant head coach through his hard work, dedication and performance," said Smith. " We have great trust and belief in Luke’s ability to work with our entire coaching staff to lead our young men through the first five games this fall. I have confidence our entire football family will work together to maintain our standard of excellence."

Most Buckeye fans' will be pleased with this announcement, as Coach Fickell is a young, savvy coach that is viewed favorably amongst the fan base.  In practice, this will have minimal effect on play-calling.  Jim Bollman will continue to call plays on offense, and will likely be exclusively responsible for game calls, without Tressel's input.  Defensively, Jim Heacock will remain primarily responsible, with input from Fickell, as the two have functioned in recent years.

Star-divide

The more intriguing situation will be game time decisions such as when to kick or go to two-point conversations.  FIckell indicated that situation would still be resolved.  As both Coach Tressel and Fickell hinted at, such decisions will likely be made in a committee-style decision.

Tressel also made clear that he had no intention of resigning.

"We think what’s important here are these kids," Tressel said. "Whether you have some personal discomfort going on or you make personal mistakes or whatever, (resigning) wouldn’t be something that would jump in my mind unless there came a point in time where I said in my mind, ‘The best thing for those kids would be if I do.’

"I don’t feel that way."

It should come as no surprise to most observers that Jim Tressel has no plans to step down.  Absent some jarring new revelation, Jim Tressel is locked in to move forward.

"What I owed to Ohio State was 24-7," Tressel said. "I know this, as the season begins next year it may be 24/6. I know that but we’ll work hard to make sure our guys are ready to go. It’ll be 24/6, and the seventh day is the one you love."

Beyond an example of classic Tressel dead-pan humor, the statement is simply a reminder that this remains Tressel's team.  Even without coaching, in-week preparation has a far bigger influence on whether a team wins on Saturday than any in-game decisions.  The main message coming from the presser was that Tressel remains fully in-control and has no intention of that changing.

This is important and what we needed to hear. As long as the issue isn’t affecting how Tressel runs the team, there should be minimal impact on a day-to-day level. The gameplans will all be crafted by him, or at least overseen by him, and early-game decisions (kick/receive, directions) will similarly be set before the game. What could be an issue is late-game management when he won’t be in contact with Fickell or the other coaches. How are offensive adjustments being made? When do you go on 4th down?

It will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

I’m hoping they Walsh/Belichick things down to the last detail, deciding all of this in the relative calm of the offseason or Sun-Fri. Obviously, not every contingency can be foreseen and not every decision made beforehand, but they can minimize whatever discrepancy there might be between the value of late-game decisions made by Tressel and those made by Fickell or other coaches.

I think that’s the only way to handle it, especially with a young quarterback. They are going to attempt to minimize any unforeseen event by detailing everything.

Pearl served a similar suspension

he coached the team everyday except on game day. There may have been some situations where his presence was missed, but overall, I don’t think it was that bad.

Actual dates of spring practice for Ohio State?

Considering March 31st is day one, and the spring game on April 23rd will be the final spring practice, what are the actual dates when Ohio State will be practicing? Also – any jersey changes to report?

The team will practice from March 31st to April 22nd. Sundays are off, but there’s a jersey scrimmage on the 16th.

James Jackson and Keith Wells are not on the roster. Jackson is transferring from Ohio State; Wells is waiting on scores to transfer in from Columbus State.

I mean the actual dates

Ohio State can only practice 15 times. Today was one; the spring game will be another, so there are 2.

In years past, Ohio State would release dates as to when the team was practicing. If Ohio State practices April 1st and 2nd, they will have used up three practices, with arguably three weeks before the spring game. They can’t practice every day between now and April 22nd, even with Sundays off. That is more than 15 practices.

For example, one of the Saturdays, maybe April 16th, I would guess would be devoted to the kick scrimmage.

I don’t believe they have released the actual dates this year. They surprised the media with Tressel’s press conference two days beforehand. Information is tightly-flowing right now.
