Ohio State Press Conference Live Thread- Ohio State suspends Tressel for Two Games

Update: Ohio State has suspended Jim Tressel for two games next season, required a public reprimand, fined him $250,000, and required attendance for a compliance seminar at some point in the future.

Jim Tressel's  Official Statement:  "I am sorry and disappointed this happened. At the time the situation occurred, I thought I was doing the right thing. I understand my responsibility to represent Ohio State and the game of football. I apologize to any and all of the people I have let down. I will grow from this experience."

Nothing positive is ever going to come out of a press conference like this, but there are varying degrees of negatives that can result from this situation. Even if Coach Tressel is guilty of not reporting the original tip to his superiors, there are plenty of possible mitigating factors and circumstances that explain why the tip was not thoroughly investigated back in April. The  media, as they are apt to do, have already latched onto the worst possible scenario, but it is highly doubtful that Jim Tressel would ever be fired for this issue.

All of the guessing and reporting of anonymous sources has been done, and it's now time to watch the press conference and get Ohio State's explanation of the report.

Ohio State has recommended sanctions in self-report issued to NCAA today to be released

From Joe Schad.

by Tyler T. on Mar 8, 2011 6:43 PM EST reply actions

For what it’s worth, some friends I have in athletics & compliance around the country tell me they don’t think is is nearly the big issue it’s being reported to be for a few reasons:

1) We don’t know the level of detail Tressel knew about the allegations, and

2) This is not anything more than a minor secondary infraction if he did know anything tangible, and

3) Ohio State still self-reported the allegations prior to the NCAA ever learning of them, and

4) Tressel never needed to hide anything from investigators

So while it’s blowing up as a story, these folks, with no affiliation to Ohio State, feel it’s much ado about nothing.

by KyleSLamb on Mar 8, 2011 6:47 PM EST reply actions

I really hope you’re correct, Kyle, but 10TV is reporting that he will be suspended two games next season.

by Tyler T. on Mar 8, 2011 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

And I’m fairly certain that will be the case. He still violated his contract and, possibly, committed secondary infractions for not reporting. So I imagine he’ll be suspended a few games by the university, fined and Ohio State might receive some minor probationary things.

All I mean is that if this is all that is being alleged, it won’t be armageddon for the OSU football program.

by KyleSLamb on Mar 8, 2011 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

It appears that Yahoo did not break the story, but were informed by someone inside the NCAA. Ohio State was self-investigating the issue and had compiled a report on it before the news broke yesterday. Ohio State will release the report tonight, according to Joe Schad.

by Tyler T. on Mar 8, 2011 6:51 PM EST reply actions

isn’t that breaking the story?

It’s unclear how explicit the directive was. If the attorney outright instructed Coach Tressel to not share the information, then it’s also not likely he would be in trouble with Ohio State or the NCAA. But if it was an inference on Tressel’s part that he should not share the information, then it was a mistaken one.

And their so called journalists are biased.
Big Lie: Big Ten
Clueless in Columbus
Must-win for OSU
Pryor wins but can’t find consistency

All of these “stories” have an apparent negative connotation. That’s the way Yahoo! Sports covers the Ohio State football program, and it’s not honest journalism.

Those “stories” are columns, written by “Yahoo! sports’ national columnist.” They are supposed to have a bias.

Did you happen to notice Wetzal’s face is on those? And his face isn’t on the Ohio State article from last night.

by LucyImHome on Mar 8, 2011 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

You must have missed this, from the original report last night:

By Charles Robinson and Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports

How convenient, eh? You must be as honest as these Yahoo! guys.
I’m seeing a bit of a pattern with this Wetzel character.

by Simmsinns on Mar 8, 2011 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not really getting the hate at Wetzel. He’s good at the investigative stuff; he has a fault, and it’s that he tries to turn every piece he writes into an investigation, but he really got the piece right, even though it appeared weak in the beginning.

by Tyler T. on Mar 8, 2011 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

I dislike Wetzel’s pieces because he essentially does the opposite of homerism. He writes a lot of his stuff with an obvious slant that makes it not at all enjoyable to read, and makes him intellectually dishonest. Adrain Woj and Jason Cole to the same crap, and it’s not good sports journalism.

So your lack of reading comprehension = my dishonesty? Nice.

Re-read my post. Face is the key, not byline.

by LucyImHome on Mar 8, 2011 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, yes, the picture of his face is the key here.

When 100% of his coverage of this specific program is negative 100% of the time, that’s irrelevant, so long as they get the picture of his face or lack of one right.

"I want my unwarranted optimism back." -Dilbert

by Simmsinns on Mar 8, 2011 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

You’ve clearly made up you mind about the guy, and that’s fine. I’m certainly not saying his opinion stuff is good or bad – I don’t read his columns myself, fwiw.

But the content from the article we’ve been discussing the last 24 hours seem to have been good. His past opinion that the Big Ten football schedule is easy doesn’t change that.

by LucyImHome on Mar 8, 2011 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve made the observation that coverage of the Ohio State football program on Yahoo! Sports has a very notable bias. That’s they way they do things. It’s relevant here as they sensationalize things in a negative way in order to gain traffic and thus generate ad revenue. Yahoo! also does that on a regular basis. Again, that’s the way they do things. Big bold red letters on the front page that read BREAKING and talking about firings and vacating seasons, for what amounted to a 2-game suspension. Even now, the Yahoo! Sports front page has well over 5 links to this stuff. I don’t even like ESPN either, but for comparison go to their homepage, and there is one small text link. This situation has been blown way out of proportion by none other than the very same outlet that consistently covers the program in a negative light, big surprise.

by Simmsinns on Mar 8, 2011 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

Every news organization that’s ever existed had the goal of making money – that’s not unique to Yahoo. And there is nothing wrong with saying “Breaking” when they are, you know, breaking a story.

Jim Tressel getting suspended and fined is a big story. Go check out the front of Foxsports, CBSSportsline, etcs., big pics of JT with links to the story.

Nothing I’ve seen by Yahoo is dramatically different than what you’d get if any major outlet got to the story first. When you get the story you need to promote it.

by LucyImHome on Mar 8, 2011 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

Sure, then we better start preparing for Yahoo!’s Level Five in which Tressel is fired, the 5 players are completely ineligible for 2011, we lose scholarships, receive a bowl ban, and vacate our entire 2010 season.

Ha! Now more people are likely to click www.AwesomePennyStocks.com in the sidebar, their paying premium for that banner.

Dude come on. It’s clear which side of the issue you fall on but Yahoo was reporting what they did the way they did to get hits. Don’t try to front on that.

It would be hard for me to accept him. Maybe I’m wrong but He rubbed me the wrong way during the 06 title game after he let Tebow throw and score a td late in the 4th qtr when the game was already won by Florida.
Funny cause a year later in the 07 title game, Coach Miles (a Michigan man) was in the same position late in the 4th qtr and a smaller lead and he did the opposite of Urban.

Urban Meyer was involved in far more nefarious doings at Florida than this. And that’s what probably bothers me most about this issue— Jim Tressel appears dirty to the college football world at large. Everyone involved in scouting or recruiting in the South has stories about each program that would make the hair on your neck stand up, but proving these allegations are extremely difficult. If Southern schools had the oversight that Ohio State had as an institution, Cameron Newton would have been suspended and the recruiting game down there would be much cleaner.

by Tyler T. on Mar 9, 2011 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

I know Urban isn't a clean sheet.

But having a Buckeye guy is important to me. In a decade or so when Tress will be winding down, Urban will be only as old as JT is now. He can enjoy his broadcasting career, and perhaps some of the more nefarious doings attached to his name will be forgotten. That’s not to say I approve of that mentality, especially in the wake of our own problems but I view Urban as a great coach and an even better recruiter (as long as it’s by the books). Although I think he would have to adjust his football philosophy to be a little more Ohio State and B1G in general.

Not that I think it would happen, just musings.

Chekwa came on a radio show (comman man and the torg) and he explained how viscous the SEC schools were in recruiting compared to Ohio State.

There are certain inconsistencies in the report. Clearly, Tressel should have asked for legal advice from Ohio State, but it’s just as clear that he felt a real responsibility to the investigation to keep it quiet. We’re going to have a lot more on this in the coming days, unfortunately, but a quick recap of events should be up later.

OK, that’s enough of this for me tonight. I think we have to step back to keep this in perspective. For example, a month ago I was diagnosed with two (2) types of cancer. Trust me, this week’s events are not that big of a deal.

Thanks, Tyler. It’s all Stage 1, so I’m in good shape. My doctor told me that something else will kill me (OSU faux pas’?) not the ‘C’. One of my issues is that since I like to golf, I’ve got about a dozen ball caps, which won’t be doing me any good since I’m trending to the wide-brimmed hats.

Can anyone get me a deal on OSU-themed, signed wide brimmed hats? I keed, I keed…

Very sorry to hear.

I just lost a very dear friend to ovarian cancer a couple weeks ago and I’m ashamed to say I certainly lost perspective on this. Thanks for putting me in my place. Hope you beat the c-word.

by Cry on Mar 9, 2011 3:02 AM EST up reply actions

Cry, I appreciate your concern. I’ve very sorry hear about the loss of your very dear friend. But even this is perspective within perspective. The “biggie” of the two “C’s” is mycosis fungoides. I know, it sounds like a Greek omelette. It is uncurable, but very treatable; this will not kill me.. My brother-in-law has multiple myloma, so his time frame is a good bit shorter than mine. So I certainly have gotten the better of the two deals.

Having said that, I am a bit disappointed on how this OSU thing went down. I don’t think there was any malicious intent on JT’s part, but it is what it is. As much respect that I’ve had, and continue to have for Jim Tressel, the integrity of the Ohio State University trumps all. And this, coming from a Muskingum College alumnus.

O-H

I-O

Glad to hear that you caught it early and that it’s treatable. Hope you get to hit the links for many many more years. I also agree that I don’t think there was anything malicious in JT’s intentions. I think he made a judgment call, and being that he is human, it may not have been exactly perfect. Agreed that it’s the University’s eyes that I hate to see blackened and I am sure that Jim feels exactly the same way.
