Along the Links: Ohio State Football Recruiting 5/16
Spanning the 'net to give you a constant variety of recruiting news. The thrill of commitments and the agony of reject. The human drama of high school competition. This is ATO's, Along the Links!
Rivals debuts their initial Top 100 and Top 250 lists for the 2012 class. As usual, their lack of coverage in the Midwest is glaring and greatly reduces the credibility of their rankings, in my opinion. In one of the stronger years for in-state talent in recent memory, Ohio lands 7 in the top hundred but not one 5 star recruit. Of the many Ohioans worthy of inclusion but left out are Chris Wormley, Bam Bradley, De'Van Bogard, and Frank Epitropoulos.
The US Army All-American Bowl has announced their 400 nominations. Among the recruits under consideration for selection are some Buckeye targets in the Dayton area, Illinois, the Baltimore/D.C. area, and the land of 1000 lakes.
The NCAA attempted to provide more transparency into its enforcement process by inviting about 30 journalists for an eight-hour seminar called "The Enforcement Experience." The goal was to dispel what the NCAA says are myths about a process that's even more complicated than you might think.
Two more Buckeye targets made their commitments elsewhere last week. One of which never gave Ohio State more than a passing glance and the other won't be able to follow up on his commitment for two years before enrolling at Tennessee.

CantonRep.com - Those who have seen the preseason depth chart inside the McKinley coaching office at Fawcett Stadium were not surprised at who the starting quarterback is going into the summer. Tyler Foster. Johnson made that decision — like he did the Worstell decision earlier to start him — without a competition.

Of the many Ohioans worthy of inclusion but left out are Chris Wormley, Bam Bradley, De’Van Bogard, and Frank Epitropoulos.
Rivals habitual exclusion of Midwest coverage is expected by now, but leaving Chris Wormley off the top 250 is indefensible. In a year where Ohio might have the best defensive line crop in the entire country, some recruiting analysts (not at Rivals, clearly) rank Wormley in the top two along with Adolphus Washington.
You can argue where they make their break between star ratings...
…but I like the rivals method of ranking.
As I understand, it is a recursive algorithm (where multiple unknowns are solved simultaneously).
The programs are ranked by their ability to sign highly sought after recruits.
The recruits are ranked by the quantity and ranking of the programs who offer them a scholarship.
In this way, Rivals is able to incorporate to opinions of NCAAF staffs nationwide in ranking recruits.
Rivals staff uses their experience to determine where to break between star ratings occur, attempting to make the star rating constant over years (sometimes there are very few 5 stars at a position).
A valid criticism is that players who commit early are destined to a lower rating because they are less likely to garner additional offers. This in turn hurts the rankings of teams that are able to attract recruits to sign early. At least partially offsetting this is that almost all highly rated recruits receive offers before the end of their Junior year in high school.
I believe scout relies entirely on the opinions of their staff, though I suspect they use program interest in their decision process.
The recruits are ranked by the quantity and ranking of the programs who offer them a scholarship.
That’s not true, at least not consistently. Rivals may factor in reported offers, but their analysts make their own evaluations and rankings. Rivals has habitually under-covered the Midwest by spending fewer resources on the area than their competitors. They don’t even have a dedicated Midwest recruiting analyst.
Thanks for the correction...
…I missed the pat where they factor in their opinions (I had originally read it as just determining where they make the break between stars).
