Eddie George elected to College Football Hall of Fame

An oil painting by "CH" depicts George's 207-yard gashing of the Notre Dame defense in 1995.

Former Ohio State running back and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. George will be inducted into honored company on December 6th, 2011 in a ceremony that will also include former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr.

As a Buckeye from 1992-1995, George piled up impressive rushing numbers and entered Buckeye lore for his 1995 season which culminated in a Heisman Trophy amidst plenty of memorable moments. From his 207-yard performance against Notre Dame in late September to his 314-yard crescendo against Illinois in November, George dominated the 1995 season and led an Ohio State team that would finish 7th in the country in the final composite rankings.

After attending Fork Union Military Academy for three years, George chose to attend Ohio State as a member of the 1992 recruiting class. Ohio State coaches declined to redshirt the 19-year old freshman and George played in eleven games during the 1992 season, rushing for five touchdowns and 176 yards on 37 carries. He would experience a mildly disappointing sophomore season, receiving only five more carries than the year before.

With Raymont Harris's graduation, George became Ohio State's lead tailback his junior season. He gained 1,442 yards on 276 carries, a 5.2 yards-per-carry average, and scored 12 touchdowns, introducing himself to the college football world and preparing himself for a historic senior campaign.

Star-divide

Eddie George edged out Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier at the 1995 Heisman Trophy ceremony, a moment that still rankles Cornhuskers everywhere, and claimed the first Heisman Trophy for Ohio State since Archie Griffin in 1975. George compiled 1,927 rushing yards on 328 carries his Heisman season, scoring an incredible 24 touchdowns and averaging over 160 yards per game.

After nine seasons in the NFL-- eight with the Titans organization that drafted him 14th overall in the 1996 draft-- George retired at the age of 31. He now owns a restaurant in Columbus, Eddie George's Grille 27, and remains a visible supporter of Ohio State football.
