Along the Links: Ohio State Football Recruiting 5/23

Your latest Buckeye!

Spanning the 'net to give you a constant variety of recruiting news. The thrill of commitments and the agony of reject. The human drama of high school competition. This is ATO's, Along the Links!

The biggest Buckeye recruiting news of the past week was adding the commitment of Cleveland St Ignatius tight end Blake Thomas.  Click on to read the commitment stories from BuckeyeGrove.com, the Buckeye Battle Cry, the Columbus Dispatch, and the Plain Dealer.  My scouting report of Thomas has also been posted at TheRinger.com.

A topic that has surprisingly made few waves across the internets is an idea that came out of the recent Big Ten meetings.  I know, I know.  Teenagers selling and trading their trinkets for some ink is soooo much more important to the current buisness of big time college athletics.  /sarcasm.

The gist of this proposal is to bridge the financial gap between what a "full scholarship" pays for and the actual monies spent by a student athlete to live their life.  Most people are surprised to learn there are many costs not covered for these young people.  Plus, due to NCAA rules, they often have difficulty earning the money needed to cover these expenses as well.  Some opinions on the idea can be found on ESPN.com, in Alabama's Press Register, as well as in the New York Daily News.  The ramifications it could have on recruiting could truly alter the landscape of college athletics from the top to the bottom.

Finally, Nike and the Elite 11 folks staged their final combines of the spring at Ohio State this weekend.  These events are invaluable to the program thanks to the exposure it generates among the nations elite recruits.  A list of the prominent Buckeye targets in attendance has been compiled for the 2012 class and the 2013 class.  Here is a  preview of the Elite 11 from Rivals and recaps of the top performers from ESPN, 24/7 Sports, and Scout

Scout.com: Buckeye Recruiting: Numbers Not Important
As we take another look at Ohio State's attempt to put together a top recruiting class, there still isn't any tangible evidence that the Buckeye effort is being hurt by the school's pending NCAA troubles, although there are a few troubling signs. Also, it seems that although the numbers were originally tight, that probably is not the case today.

TomVH: Weekly Update: Armani Reeves, Allen Gant, Adolphus Washington, and More
Michigan has been on a roll with commitments so far with the 2012 class. What may be more impressive than the number of commitments is how they're getting kids to change their decision timelines. They've had a number of prospects that were thought to be waiting until after their season pull the trigger. That trend might continue in the near future. Here's a look at this week's happenings.

Most people are surprised to learn there are many costs not covered for these young people

I was a student-athlete at OSU and I can tell you that athletes with ‘full rides’ had to do a lot of things to make ends meet.

There were literally Olympic athletes who got maybe 4-5 hours of sleep a day because they would practice and go to class during the day and then work graveyard shifts because their scholarship didn’t even come close to covering tuition and rent.

I always thought it was incredibly unfair that if you received a scholarship by any means other than athletics, you could pretty much do anything legal to earn money. These kids are generating hundreds of millions of dollars for their schools but have severe restrictions on how and when they are allowed to make some money for themselves. The height of hypocrisy IMO…

I was in a discussion with a former Division III athlete who was brutal on the Ohio State players selling their awards. He believed that Division I student-athletes received much more money than they actually do, and his views were tinged with a bit of jealousy because of his own background.

It shocks people when they find out how restrictive the scholarships actually are in a sport like football. Athletes can’t have jobs during the school year due to the class and practice schedule, and any summer jobs they receive have to work with the intense summer workout schedule.

When the players sold their awards for cash and ink, they weren’t living the lavish life and attending parties sponsored by agents like the UNC case. They were gaining some discretionary spending money and using it how many college kids do.

So true. Even in sports that don’t restrict if they allow you to work, its unlikely you will be able to work much. Its a full time job being on a team, my team practiced well over the allotted hours, and we did it voluntarily (legally) and happily because that what it takes to compete at the DI level.
