Ohio State to Investigate Players' Car Deals

Ohio State has announced an investigation into used-car purchases made by athletes and their families from two different dealerships in the past five or six years. The Columbus Dispatch reports:

Ohio State University's chief enforcer of NCAA rules said yesterday that he will investigate used-car purchases made by dozens of OSU athletes at two Columbus car dealers to see if any sale violated collegiate rules.

The investigation was initiated after The Dispatch found in public records that at least eight Ohio State athletes and 11 athletes' relatives bought used cars from Jack Maxton Chevrolet or Auto Direct during the past five years. The investigation will involve outside experts and examine at least 50 sales, focusing on whether the athletes received improper benefits.

Ohio State is specifically investigating the issue because of a certain salesman, Aaron Kniffin, who has worked at both dealerships and is responsible for many of the transactions. Ohio State has not detected any case of improper benefits, but the large number of athletes purchasing cars from the same salesman has sufficiently frightened the program.

The Dispatch conducted an interview yesterday with Ohio State head of compliance Doug Archie and the owners of the two dealerships.

In a joint interview with Archie yesterday, Jack Maxton owner Jeff Mauk and Auto Direct owner Jason Goss both said they never have given athletes special deals.

Mauk estimated that 40 to 50 Buckeyes bought cars from his dealership in the past five or six years .

Archie said that he was aware of all the transactions involving the athletes that The Dispatch found, but he was unaware of purchases made by their relatives.

Both dealers, whose businesses are not connected, say they routinely call Archie's office when an athlete is ready to buy a car, provide the purchase price and discuss who will co-sign on a loan. Archie said he relies on the car dealers to provide accurate information.

Star-divide

Ohio State became aware of the large number of transactions between Kniffin and players after a Columbus Dispatch request for public records turned up the connection. Specifically, then Buckeye Thaddeus Gibson had a peculiarity with his purchase deed.

Public records show that in 2009, a 2-year-old Chrysler 300 with less than 20,000 miles was titled to then-sophomore linebacker Thaddeus Gibson. Documents show the purchase price as $0.

Mauk could not explain it. "I don't give cars for free," he said. Gibson said he was unaware the title on his car showed zero as the sales price. "I paid for the car, and I'm still paying for it," he said, declining to answer further questions.

The Dispatch notes that others who have purchased vehicles from the dealership include Beanie Wells, Robert Rose, Doug Worthington, Maurice Wells, Solomon Thomas, and assorted family members of players.

Citing two unnamed former NCAA officials, the Dispatch states that there is "cause for concern" over the large number of transactions between players and the same salesman.

When contacted to make a statement, Kniffin said the sales prices were "much more than that" and disputed that the sales prices on the public records were accurate. Kniffin no longer works at the dealerships in question.

The Dispatch contacted Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles Registrar Mike Rankin to comment on the issue of under-reported loan values. Rankin believes an investigation into the dealerships' business dealings would be worthwhile, and he suggested one would take place. It is a first-degree misdemeanor to report inaccurate car sale information for tax purposes, and the dealerships could be facing charges if it's determined that they were attempting to subvert the tax code.

I remember

My senior year was ‘02-’03. I remember going through the drive-thru at Burger King one time, and the car in front of me was a black Cadillac Escalade with a vanity license plate that read “MO HALL.” This has probably been going on for quite some time.

I have no doubt that it’s been going on since people started caring about football in Columbus. Cheap loans are one of the easiest ways for fans to improperly benefit the players.

They are investigating because the Dispatch is making these claims. The truth is that regardless if these transactions were legal or not, the article gives the impression of wrongdoing. I believe the Dispatch should have allowed for further investigation before putting out this crap to try and sell a few copies. Sensational “journalism” at it’s finest. The goal seems to be parlaying a “hot” story into relevance and a self-claim of importance due to watching 60 Minutes and wanting to be like Mike Wallace.

Funny… Facts always seem to go by the wayside when homerism is involved. The USC situation is going to look like a walk in the park when this is over.

Sales Tax?

It’s been a while since I’ve lived in Ohio, much less purchased a vhicle there, but I remember buy a ar from an uncle and when I went to title it, he wrote $0 as the sale price. I believe he did that because when you title a used car, you pay the sales tax on the purchase price. If you write $0 then you pay sales tax based on he current vale of the vehicle. Maybe that’s why it was listed as $0?

They allegedly go buy book value of the car, making the $0 amount irrelevant.

by biggy84 on May 7, 2011 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe that is only legal when transferring vehicles between family members. If it was done to avoid the sales tax, then the car company was committing a crime. Maybe someone with familiarity in the used-car business can clear this up.

It’s a bad day year to be a Buckeye fan. I feel bad for you guys. As A Michigan fan I will say it does give me a little joy to see The Vest in trouble. All in all though it does suck to see this potentially take away from the rivalry’s recent renewal of strenght.

All in all though it does suck to see this potentially take away from the rivalry’s recent renewal of strenght.

What would that be, exactly?

by Tyler T. on May 9, 2011 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously?

Look at the buzz Coach Hoke has started in Ann Arbor just with recruiting. If you can’t see a renewal starting in that then you need to take off your Buckeye tinted glasses.

by Wes Sutton on May 9, 2011 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

On the surface you're right

But once you dig deeper not so much. Now when Michigan beats Ohio then there will be a asterix next to it saying OSU was bogged down with NCAA issues. Sort of like the last 3 years how everybody and their little brother beat Michigan. Those wins all have a mental asterix of Rich Rod.

by Wes Sutton on May 9, 2011 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

If you are fortunate enough to beat Ohio State, the pure jubilation in Ann Arbor will not be restrained by an asterisk.

It's so easy....

Even Appalachian St beat your beloved team with a " #ichigan" man as a coach. Btw, you shouldn’t speak of probation while your team is on it. You were the same guy who thought Rich Rod was the savior. You are like Charlie Brown and the football.

ya why are there michigan people on here gloating in our demise?

They don’t have bowl game victories to talk about at TSUN, so they have to go to a winners page and talk smack.

no gloating here

just saying it’s gotta suck to be a buckeye fan right now. seems like every week there is more and more bad news for you guys.

Thanks for that one guys. At least UF fans aren’t obnoxious about anything.

If the team you root for ever plays in the national championship game, it does not suck to be a fan of that team.

Relatively, but losing a title game in such devastating fashion sucks

1996 was awful for us.

haha.. in Michigan, recruiting buzz constitutes a renewal of strength in the rivalry.

by golfballs03 on May 10, 2011 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Funny

You hire a coach with a losing record, who was at best your 3rd choice, get a bunch of 3 star guys that OSU or any other reputable program DIDN’T want, and your team is stronger? That is funny! Hoke talks a big game, but he needs to back it up. He isn’t in a non FBS school anymore. Your team isn’t any closer than the one that got throttled in November.

how do you know hoke will be any good? I remember colin cowherd saying that Tressel " should be very affraid of Rich Rod" , and how rich rod was going to dominate us

michigan has been a complete joke for a few years now, and until they prove people wrong, they are still complete losers. Go back in your trailer and watch some bad tim allen and david allan grier movies

Win a game, then maybe you can start talking trash.

You can win the “buzz” all day, I don’t give a damn about that.

Latest

Thad Gibson’s $0 dollar title was a refi. The sales price was $13,700.

Mo Hall’s mom’s deal was a trade in for towards his car.

Have to dig to the second or third page of the Metro sectionof the Dispatch for these facts.

by rogerja on May 11, 2011 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah but $13,700 for a one year old (at the time) Chrysler 300c

Is still a tremendous deal that the general public is not getting.

Depends

Don’t know all the details. Was it a 300C? Was it a former rental? The indications are it was a bottom-of-the-line former rental and there was a trade-in. This pushed things probably $5,000 higher.

Also, used car prices, especially Dodge/Chrysler were in the toilet in 2007/2008.

If this is the transaction that hangs OSU, i’d be suprised.
