Ok, we all knew this season was going to be a bit rough, but what the hell? Seriously? Why the hell did they leave Bauserman in for so long? This should have been a win. Absolutely ridiculous.

This team should not be in the top 25. No way. We’re going to finish with a losing record this season.

Well, I threw that all out of the window when he broke his own cord and decided to do what he did in April 2010. He also left us w. a God awful QB. I mean, this is like the Indy Colts. Build the offense for one QB. If he goes down, the team goes down.

by Pariahwulfen on Sep 17, 2011 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Meyer will bring in his own guys, regardless.

The reason I was so confident with Fickell is that the Tressel powerhouse machine still has all it’s gears in Columbus. The only difference was the guy turning the crank. And he messed that up. Somehow.

I think Meyer is a winner, a recruiter, and a Buckeye and that’s why I like him. I don’t like his offense. Ohio State is Pro Style to me, even Pryor took snaps under center. Some 5 wide blasphemy would churn my stomach. But I’ll take him over Fickell in a heartbeat. And as an aside, I’d be very upset if he doesn’t keep Heacock and his defense.

by Cry on Sep 17, 2011 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Pro style in college football is a thing of the past.

I think Alabama being Alabama is the exception, but the last how many programs have won it all using that high powered attack where there’s always 5 guys in one play who may touch the ball while taking advantage of match-ups. I know Ohio State is a school of tradition, but I personally wouldn’t mind seeing that offense come to Columbus, especially with a name like Urban Meyer running it (seeing as that would give you a quicker boost in recruiting.)
I don’t blame Bollman for tonight necessarily, I blame a youthful offense and Bauserman just being… Joe Bauserman. This offense will get better as they get older, but not too much better this season in my opinion. They legitimately do not have an identity on that side of the ball.

by Dammit Cerrato... on Sep 17, 2011 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I’m not a Bollman basher at all. Fully agree with you there. And we’ve seen the spread here I’m not just sure I’m ready to fully abandon the I.

by Cry on Sep 17, 2011 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think you need to though. I like the influx of both schemes, like you said, we’ve seen it here. But when Braxton gets a few more starts under his belt is when you start opening up the offense to feed off of his abilities. I don’t think we did that with Pryor at all..
But a constant change in formations and unpredictable play calling will keep defenses honest. Our current lack of stability at QB and our young receiving core is what will continue a stagnant offense throughout this season. I think come 2012, this will be Miller’s team, and everyone will know it.
The question is, who’ll be dawning the headset :P

by Dammit Cerrato... on Sep 17, 2011 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I can’t stand Meyer as a sellout to developing his players as human beings, and his ridiculous formations make me facepalm. That said, the man wins.

Also, I doubt we’d see a complete rejection of the coaching staff—especially on the defensive side, notable coaches of ours have worked under him in the past.

Oh, and for all his thuggishness, he still loves Ohio: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2007-01-07-florida-meyer-ohio_x.htm

Never been this disappointed after a Buckeye game. Miami didn’t play well, they did play better than us though, and that was more than enough. The signs were there last week on Bauserman, the fact that our coaching staff didn’t adapt is telling to me. Bauserman and Fickle are both in waaaay over their heads.

Not calling a timeout with 2 minutes on the clock is insulting. Your defense is out on the field, fighting their asses off to keep Miami out, and a Head Coach SITS on three timeouts is a slap in the face. My coaches always told me to never quit, I can’t fathom why ours would.

Fickle is writing a book on how to destroy a young QB’s confidence, Yank him after one poor exchange? Why did you keep running Bauser out there when he was assaulting the grass with his throws?

What happened to the power running game that got us back in the game in the second quarter? I don’t have the PxP in front of me, but I remember us throwing the ball with Bauserman three straight plays after we were controling the ground game.

Playcalling sucked, coaching was atrocious and we deserved to lose. We also deserve a better head coach. I like Fickle, seems like a good guy, but Ohio State isn’t a place where you learn how to be a Head Coach.

by Bernie19Kosar on Sep 17, 2011 11:17 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Isn’t Fickle basically leaving the offense to Bollman? You want to blame the playcalling there, blame him. Fickle can take the heat for the TOs, and for not taking charge of the offense himself, but don’t hit him with someone else’s screwups.

If it’s Fickle you can hit him there, but you can’t blame him for calling three straight pass plays with EPIC FAIL at QB. Blaming him for not realizing we couldn’t move the damn ball with him in is perfectly fine.

by Pariahwulfen on Sep 17, 2011 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

And not only this, I think Miller and Bauserman have two different offenses in the playbook with their name on it. And when Fickle is pulling them in and out on a whim it was clear that the playcalls blurred and the offense lost any effectiveness. And when Bollman finally got the chance to call a series with Braxton firmly in mind, he runs the run option, to the left, like 3 straight times? I get that you want to keep the pressure off of Braxton and it worked, but jeez.

by Cry on Sep 17, 2011 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Head Coach is the top of the food chain for a reason.

Plus, Bollman wasn’t running Bauserman out there or yanking Miller at the drop of a hat. That’s on Fickle 100%.

At one point, and I think it started when they were driving in the endzone, Clemson had the box absolutely stacked. Doesn’t take a genius to see that Bauserman couldn’t throw to a wide open receiver, let alone someone who lightly jogged along side him while texting his girlfriend and flipping through his iPod.

I also remember the 3 straight pass plays, or something along those lines. And I think only one was playaction, can anyone confirm? And it was pathetic. If you want to spark something, put Miller in right there. So at that point Miami has us exactly where they want us, and they kept us there. We couldn’t run when they brought 8 or 9, and Bauserman couldn’t pass if they brought all 11.

I absolutely love this post for the line you left us with, and because of that, I’m going to steal it and repost it so that the clear point of this game can be made again.

I like Fickle, seems like a good guy, but Ohio State isn’t a place where you learn how to be a Head Coach.

I’m interested to see Ross Fulton’s analysis on this game. I saw two things, and I’ll have to watch it again to really tell.

1. The O-Line I think has often been ripped on because of ineffectiveness. I didn’t see too much different in their blocking tonight other than a back who has great vision. J.Hall reminded me tonight of K. Moreno when he was at GA. He’d make a cut get up field and then when he went down he’d pup up and get back to the huddle. Our O-Line had blocked well but not had a Back with great vision since Beanie.

2. This defense, despite giving up over 200! yards rushing is really special. There’s not reason Miami should have had the ball as much as they did. They had nearly a 10 minute TOP advantage. They manages 24 points one of which was the last drive wit the D winded and that started with a dropped pick-6. If the offense had played better this game could very well have been a 14 point – 17 point Miami total score. With a poor defense this is a Miami rout.

3. Joe Bauserman is not ready to play QB at this level. I know there were drops, but there were several times I saw open receivers waiving for the ball and he chucked it in the stands or out of bounds. He often looked like he’d lock on to one read and then watch it hoping it would open up at which time he’d not have time to throw to the check down and would chuck it out of bounds or way over the receiver’s head.

Braxton Miller is more confident. It appeared that, even with the miscues, the OLine blocked better when he was in there, and he was able to make decisions much faster than Bauserman. One such occasion was on a pass play where the blocking broke down and he was able to step up and extend the play to the right. Reed was coming back to him and he hit him on the hands near the marker and reed dropped the pass. Joe B doesn’t even get it to the receiver for him to drop the pass he would have thrown it into the stands or out of bounds.

The other thing I noticed is that Braxton has the wheels to get to the edge of the defense and make them pay. One thing Miami did have was speed and he seemed fast enough to really be a running threat. It would seem at this point that the two quarterback system will not work. It is broken badly. Luke will likely name Miller as the starter for next week and Joe B as the backup. Miller is just a better player and when given a time to set into a grove, with this defense he gives us a good chance to move the chains and stay in the game. I can NOT see this offence scoring 0 TD’s tonight is Miller was given even a whole half to himself. The offence would have scored 7’s probably multiple times on a Miami D that did not jump out to me as dominant at all.

Miller’s era, I think, will begin next week.

by DarkHorse3d on Sep 17, 2011 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

This season the OLine has had problems mostly to too many bodies coming at them, or having problems picking up the blitz. It’s part of the reason we could move the ball with Miller in, but not with EPIC FAIL under center. With Miller Miami was forced to consider the additional rusher going to the other side. Also, a lot of the runs when we got started were cutbacks to the open hole on the opposite side of the line.

In the name of the Woody, the Bo, and the Mustache Ride. Amen.

by Pariahwulfen on Sep 17, 2011 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Teams have been bringing 8 man fronts against us this season. Miami did it as well. In those cases The Tailback is responsible for the 8th man. Often times there isn’t a “hole” but 7 men are well blocked. What Hall does is see this and make the cut and he does it quickly. I don’t necessarily fault the O-Line when teams are walking safeties up on us because they know we can’t go down field. With Braxton in there they can’t be as aggressive with the 8 man front because there is an additional run threat. It also causes them to not be able to blitz as much either. It was obvious that with Miller in, even with the I, that Miami was not as aggressive attacking the run. They would have to fear the play action bootleg. If I’m bollman I’m running a lot of I and then PA bootlegs off of it. With Miller under center. Then mix in spread looks less often. I think it’s safe to say Hall can be an I-Formation running back. 14 touches tonight. Cramps aside I think he easily tops 100 yards

Seeing Hyde carry the ball right after Hall, it was very self evident that the OLine was fine and that we need Boom back badly. Herron/Hall should be great in B1G play.

2. This defense, despite giving up over 200! yards rushing is really special. There’s not reason Miami should have had the ball as much as they did. They had nearly a 10 minute TOP advantage. The defense was fantastic. Klein, Sweat, and Sabino are all special LBs. John Simon is a beast, he’s just so damn strong. In fact I really don’t worry about the Front 7 at all, the secondary is another thing entirely. As far as 200 yards rushing, when you consider that over 100 came in one quarter, you have to consider it an anomaly.
3. Joe Bauserman is not ready to play QB at this level. Jesus, he was miserable. That one play, where the intended play was a screen and there were more than one receivers open and he just took a sack. Pathetic. Read through your progressions.
Miller’s era, I think, will begin next week.

Miller was clearly the better playmaker. It has to be his team from here out. I’m just so mad it took 2 games and 3 quarters.

Phenomenal Summary...

I really do hope that Fickell realizes that his future is lost and that the only hope he has of attracting a mid-major HC job is to open the playbook up entirely from here on out, get Miller some serious reps at QB, and put this young, directionless team in great position to succeed next year.

Great point. Bauserman had plenty of time back there, and the OLine really played well. I personally hammer the oline when they play poorly, they deserve the credit when they play well.

This D could be outstanding by the end of the year. But this new tendency to give up big plays early is unsettling. We have always excelled at making a team drive the field against us. Also, Miami was 9 for 15 on 3rd down and on a number of them the D had done an excellent job of setting up 3rd and long only to allow a first down.

In addition to his good vision Hall also gets to the hole before it can be closed.
