John Cooper Suggests NCAA Should Investigate Alabama
Former Ohio State head coach John Cooper, who grew up in the South and spent seven years coaching at Tulsa, suggested that the NCAA should investigate the Alabama football program while being interviewed on a Cleveland radio station yesterday. Cooper, who coached Ohio State from 1988-2000, called the violations that took place at Ohio State "minor" in comparison to the culture of the SEC.
"I see some of these teams, the Auburns. I'm told, I don't know and I haven't coached in that league, but I'm told that down south the Alabamas and LSUs and some of these teams that have these great players, that maybe the NCAA needs to look into their situation," Cooper said. "Those teams have been on probation. As you know, Alabama's certainly one of the most penalized teams in college football, as is the Southeastern Conference. We say the SEC's the best and they are the best, but they've also had more NCAA violations than probably all the other leagues put together the last 10 years."
If I may, I suggest you click that specific link, to the Alabama.com story, and peruse unique aspects of Southern culture that we can all be proud of as Northerners. For instance, the writer who penned this version, Matt Scalici, helpfully added at the bottom of the article that Cooper "amassed a 2-14 record against SEC schools in his career." Immediately after writing that line, Scalici no doubt rubbed his hands together with a manic glint in his eye while contemplating the genius of his counterpoint.
Commenting gold comes from one thatisstuck, who wonders why no one questions "why the president of the NCAA holds the same position at OSU while he helps to decide their punishment!?"--hint, he didn't--and imveryfunny, who infers that Cooper "prefers the indiscretions of the Big 10 over those of the SEC? I guess playing with little boys' wee wees and employing duplicitous head coaches is less egregious than a few players trying to sell textbooks they don't use?"
There's more good fun to be had at the link origin.

Though I completely agree that shady, unethical things likely occur in the SEC, and probably a percentage of other schools, I’m not the biggest fan of Cooper’s quotes. He comes bitter, rather than someone making statements that are backed up by evidence appropriate to the present. That being said, it’s real annoying to think about the amount of time the media has spent on the recent problems at OSU and PSU vs. Syracuse, UNC, Miami, and USCe.

Of course he’s bitter, the man sold the school more than anything else when he recruited there, and it’s been dragged through the mud for the past year. Meanwhile the ESS EEE SEE was literally gifted their sixth straight title by the polls despite rampant oversigning and rumors of pay to play schemes at some of those schools.

Oh... oh... can I add to the random accusations?
1 of the members of the OSU COI was a representative from the SEC.
1/3 of the COI finding for FTM was a bogus charge Smith was too stupid to question, 1/3 was BS, and 1/3 was athletes volunteering for a charity without filing the proper forms (no bullsheit).
Could it be the SEC knows they have no chance of cleaning up their own programs, so they are left trying to make the others look worse?

Id love to see someone in
The national media ask the NCAA what they are going to do about a disassociated booster being on the Bama sidelines for the championship game.

Cooper may be on to something.
I also wonder if an NCAA investigator ever even stepped foot within a 100 mile radius of “SOUTH BEND”? Does ND get an atuo-pass from the NCAA gods?
I am kind of glad that Urban Meyer has been swiping some of ND’s recruits because Brian Kelly looks like a screaming sycho when goes off on his QB’s on the sidelines.
It’s kind of creepy to think what kind of promises they must make to a kid, knowing full well the verbal abuse they are going to be taking from a coach on National T.V. at a high profile school like ND….
