Pre-Signing Day Ohio State Recruiting Tidbits
On February 1st, the majority of high school athletes with scholarship offers will sign their National Letter of Intent and officially bind themselves to their school of choice. Some will delay their signing, either to create a spectacle around themselves or because they are genuinely confused about their college decision. As it stands today, Ohio State has 23 committed athletes who have, as far as we know, full intentions to maintain their commitment and end up Buckeyes.
With recent departures and medical redshirts, Urban Meyer has room to add an additional four to six athletes to the class. He may also gain an additional scholarship if Roger Lewis, a four star receiver from Pickerington Central, cannot raise his grades and pass NCAA requirements If Lewis cannot meet the NCAA minimum, he will head to a prep school for a year and play the recruiting game all over again.
Six names have been connected to Ohio State the most these past few weeks: Kyle Dodson, Jamal Marcus, Demetrious Cox, Bam Bradley, Armani Reeves, and Davonte Neal.
Dodson, a four star offensive tackle committed to Wisconsin, will make his college choice this Saturday. Odds are that he flips from the Badgers and joins the Buckeyes. Dodson's commitment would fill the last true need on Ohio State's roster, adding depth to the depleted tackle position.
Jamal Marcus, a three star speed-rusher from North Carolina, will choose between East Carolina and Ohio State, despite holding offers from Florida, Auburn, and other Southern powers. No one seems to know where Marcus is leaning, but the obvious choice would be the BCS team, Ohio State.
Two safeties, Cox and Bradley, and one cornerback, Reeves, round-up the serious defensive recruiting list.Cox recently visited Ohio State and will choose between a spate of Big Ten powers, and Bradley is down to Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and Stanford. It had appeared that Bradley could not pass the requirements to enter the Stanford academic program, but the Cardinal admissions office is reevaluating his transcript and may allow the Trotwood-Madison product entrance. If Bradley receives acceptance to Stanford, that is where he will go.
Reeves decommitted from Penn State a day ago. Michigan and Ohio State are the two finalists for Reeves, who may be drawn to the Buckeyes through his connection to Camren Williams, Ohio State's latest linebacker commitment. Williams likewise jettisoned Penn State after the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
Davonte Neal, a four star speed athlete from Arizona, will choose between Ohio State and Arizona, most analysts agree. Rich Rodriguez has hired Neal's former high school coach as an administrator and is pitching a Wildcat revival to Neal and his family. Neal is drawn to Urban Meyer, however, and has family connections to Ohio.
Meyer is also recruiting Miami commitment Reggie Northrup, uncommitted athlete Stephon Diggs, and uncommitted offensive tackle Jordan Diamond. Northrup, a four star linebacker, is actually seen as a Florida State lean following his visit to Tallahassee last weekend, and it's doubtful that Meyer can flip him at such a late juncture. He is visiting Ohio State his weekend, though, which means there's a shot. It's unclear whether Diggs will visit Ohio State before Signing Day, although he plans to sign a few days later. Diamond is also planning to sign after the official date, but he's now viewed as a Michigan lean.

Nice wrap up
Haven’t been following closely the last week, so this is appreciated.
Cox going anywhere but Sparty would be a surprise.
I am not certain how big a draw Neal’s High School coach is for Arizona – he wasn’t enthusiastic when the hire was announced, gave Arizona zero interest before.

Diggs is visiting this weekend.
Per Rivals.com’s Mike Farrell.

Where are you seeing Diamond eliminating OSU, I just read something on ESPNChicago written last night that he will be announcing Feb 3rd, and that:
The 6-foot-6, 290-pound Diamond will choose between Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin, according to Culbreath. Diamond is the 10th-ranked offensive tackle in the country.

SB Nation is reporting he's down to 4 schools
Arkansas, Auburn, Wisconsin, and Michigan (http://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2012/1/25/2731434/jordan-diamond-national-signing-day-2012).
I guess his visit to tOSU didn’t go so well? Shame.

Diamond reportedly was never contacted by the tOSU staff after his OV. I guess you could say he was eliminated.
Hard to say...
…could be Urban sensed tOSU wasn’t really on DIamond’s list.
Con – this isn’t Urban’s style, he doesn’t even care if the recruit signed with someone else.
…could be Urban plans on filling his class and can’t leave a scholarship open for Diamond with other strong prospects.
Con – the class isn’t filled yet, he will probably have 1 or 2 openings, and OL is the greatest need.
…could be Urban saw something he didn’t like during the OV.
This is my best guess based more on a lack of other typical/viable options.

That's interesting
I wonder if they feel like they’re set at the position and want to use that scholarship elsewhere? I’ll trust em on this one ;)

So looking at the count...
I haven’t heard of any confirmed career ending injuries.
I haven’t heard of any medical grey shirts – Fellows and McVey are medical red shirts, still count
I am unaware of any voluntary grey shirts in the class.
There was 64 returning on the roster
+ QB Jones signed under the 2011 class (2011 grey shirt)
+ WR Thomas signed under the 2011 class (JuCo)
+ 21 2012 recruits with the signing of Williams
- QB Graham (transfer)
- RB Berry (likely discipline, but as yet unconfirmed)
- FB Durham (transfer)
- DB Gambrell (discipline)
- DB Cash (discipline)
- DB Clarke (discipline)
By my count, Urban currently has 1 scholarship under the 82 total limit – with more additions than this, look for more roster cuts.
Urban has 4 scholarships under the 25 yearly limit – don’t be surprised if he fills this.
example – Dodson, Neal, Reeves, Marcus
With 17 scholarship DBs on the 2012 roster at 1 point, I noted this was not the year to get into trouble – Gambrell, Cash, and Clarke should have taken notice.

With the addition of Reeves...
…Urban is back at the 82 limit, and can’t exceed more than 3 more unless someone volunteers to grey shirt.
