Jim Bollman Hired At Boston College

Former Ohio State offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Bollman has been hired as the new Boston College offensive line coach and running game coordinator.

Bollman, a favorite pincushion for Ohio State fans this past season, received a warm welcome from Boston College head coach Frank Spaziani, who pounced on Bollman once he became available. "I am very pleased to welcome Jim to the Boston College staff," Spaziani said. "As a former offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Jim brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program."

Bollman returned the kind words with his own. "I am very excited about this opportunity," Bollman said. "One of the most important and rewarding parts of my career has been working with outstanding people, and I look forward to working with Frank Spaziani and his staff. I'm very familiar with the ACC, having coached at NC State and Virginia. Boston College has a great offensive line tradition and has produced some of the best talent in the NFL. I look forward to the challenge of continuing and enhancing that tradition."

While Bollman deserved substantial criticism for his awful performance as coordinator this past season, credit him with sticking tough with Ohio State and not abandoning his players before the bowl game like many other coaches have done in similar situations. Bollman was clearly not being retained by Urban Meyer, yet he delayed his exit from Ohio State long enough to guide the Buckeyes through bowl preparation and the Gator Bowl.

Buckeye fans have already begun warning Boston College followers through Twitter, but I think the melodrama is severely overplayed. Yes, Bollman was horrid as a playcaller and gameplan-designer, but he won't be asked to do either of those things with the Eagles. Bollman, as an offensive line coach, has consistently received praise from former players and colleagues, including Alabama head coach Nick Saban who invited him to lead a clinic on the offensive line in 2009, and is a qualified candidate for the job. At Boston College, Bollman can focus on teaching the position and ignoring the passing game.

Too funny...

I am not buying into Bollman being a good OL position coach based on our experience, but I suppose BC could do worse.

“running game coordinator” – is this a real position? This sounds more like promotional BS to tell RB recruits… “Our running game coordinator was the OC for Ohio State!” akin to saying “Our HC was OC for 1 of the most prolific and feared offenses in the NFL!”

While I don’t want to sound unappreciative for sticking around, isn’t it the norm for assistant coaches to finish out the bowl game before moving on unless they are becoming a HC? I would guess it is contract related.

Change the ‘offenses’ to ‘defenses’ and you have what the browns have been saying for about 10 years. See how that worked out.

Braxton Miller could have called better plays from the huddle. I hope BC enjoys running 4 different plays next season.

I hope they enjoy running Dave ;)

I bet we still run Dave under Urban Meyer. At least in some form. Everyone runs that play.

Well...

The off-tackle power run is the basic for many college offenses, it’s just that from now on, we’ll be running it out of unpredictable empty-back formations with a slot motion. And not on subsequent first and second downs, followed by an incomplete third-and-long :/

I certainly don’t expect it to be as frustratingly predictable.

Good for him.

We’ve had lots of great years and sent plenty of OLine talent to the NFL under Bollman. Yes this last year was a stinker in a very dire situation but Bollman is not a bad coach at all and I think his unit has a great chance of dominating in the ACC. Can we please quit it with the sour grapes and just thank a good coach for a great stretch of years and wish him luck?

He was lucky to be employed here as long as he was! Tressel was loyal to a fault when it came to his assistants. Bollman showed his true colors this year in regards to his offensive intelligence. In years past, he never developed a line that dominated, while being supplied with the best recruits possible. No one did so little with so much.
