Ohio State 2012 National Signing Day Central

Photo

It's finally National Signing Day. 364 days of effort will lead to payoffs for coaching staffs across the country. For some, the day will end with dreams of national championships. For others, it will end with disappointment for what could have been. And every fanbase will live and die with the reports of 18 year old kids signing flimsy pieces of paper tying them to their school of choice.

The SportsBlog Nation platform is excellent for live-updating events like these, and we're using this page as a centralized hub for all Ohio State and national recruiting information that breaks. Ben will not be with us until later in the day, but I will be here as much as possible to pass along information and update the letter-of-intent table.

Please feel free to drop along anything you're reading and hearing in the comments section. Just below this you will find a chart that details each member of the class and their current status. We'll be updating it as soon as we hear where they've signed, or for current commits, when they've faxed in their letter-of-intents.

We want to consolidate the action in here, so there's no confusion over what's taking place.

A big thanks to Bud Elliot and Tomahawk Nation for providing the HTML code for the table.

If I recall correctly (but could be wrong)...

Diamond, Diggs, and Neal won’t announce today.
Diamond already removed tOSU from his list.

Of the remaining 4…
I am not that excited about Marcus and Bradley – Urban’s class is solid on D.
Caleb would be a huge (and welcomed) surprise, but is probably just out of reach.
Dodson is the biggest need.

No surprise Caleb signed with VT.

Tony Gerdeman at the Ozone reported a LB is coming our way and we’ll likely find out at 10:30am EST. That’s when Marcus is supposed to announce. You’re right, our D is solid on paper, but if there’s room, it’s always safe to take those who are at/above standards.

Someone on twitter who is not from any site so the source may not be true and I haven’t seen it anywhere else: ESPN said Diggs will sign today.

We’ve all heard for some time that the 10th will be his day. If it’s today, it should be pretty good news.

Heard that on twitter but wasn’t sure how great the source was. I haven’t been able to find the “original” source…

Mike from Rivals tweeted Neal is coming our way but will likely be not today.

24 at time of post

Is it possible that OSU will get to 27, with Dodson (25), Bradley (26) and Diggs/Neal (27)?

Seems like some SEC-style roster management could be in order, moreso if they get both Diggs and Neal (not likely). That’s not good.

- Bri’onte Dunn, RB

- Jacoby Boren, OL

- Cardale Jones, QB

- Mike Thomas, WR

- Joshua Perry, LB/TE

- Tyvis Powell, CB

All of these players do not count for this years class as they are all early enrollees (greenshirting).

Right, though I thought that minus thouse six, we were at 81 schollies (maybe 80?). The Marcus and Dodson puts it to 82-83

My math could be wrong, but i think anymore puts OSU well over the 82 limit.

by rogerja on Feb 1, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Recruiting limit math...

There was 64 returning on the roster
+ QB Jones signed under the 2011 class (2011 grey shirt)
+ WR Thomas signed under the 2011 class (JuCo)
+ 23 other recruits signed in the 2012 class
- QB Graham (transfer)
- FB Durham (transfer)
- DB Gambrell (discipline)
- DB Cash (discipline)
- DB Clarke (discipline)
= 84 2 over the 82 limit withe the sanctions.

Surprising (and a bit disappointing) to me, Berry hasn’t been cut from the roster.
Urban is still pursuing Diggs and Neal.

Unless someone volunteered to grey shirt, 2 to 4 more roster cuts are coming.
Expect them to be DLs and/or DBs with an outside chance of a WR because of lack of depth at other positions.

Correction... make that 65 returning on the roster.

Nate Williams was given a medical redshirt.

Urban is 3 over the limit with the above list, and needs to cut the roster by 3 to 5.

Several players (McVey? Fellows? Hagan?) might medical redshirts next year
If they completely separate from the varsity squad, they don’t count against the scholarship limit.

I would be surprised if this happens – all have used their redshirt season already, complete separation isn’t a fun thing to do and can put them back further.

I dont discount your math at all, but Urban is quoted as saying we are at 81 right now. So we will get one of Diggs or Neal, not both. And it does mean something is amiss in your summary.

Thanks for the link.

…this means he already knows who the 4 are who won’t go against the scholarship count are.

Typically they downplay the announcement while the athlete looks for a new home. Most of the time the player announces he is looking to “Move closer to home” “Get more playing time” :Move on to the next phase of his life" etc. Some could be medical red shirts who will completely separate from the varsity squad for a year.

Actually, 4 count as this year's class.

Green shirts can count toward either class, but there still has to be room under the previous slasses 25 limit.

Urban was able to slide Jones and Thomas into the 2011 class.

27 = 25

2 who are listed as 2012 recruits were signed as part of the 2011 class.
1 was a planned grey shirt.
The other was recruited out of JuCo.

If we land one of the those top wideouts in Neal or Diggs and an OT in Jordan Diamond…. woah… Already a successful class nonetheless.

The ground made up since Urbz got here is remarkable!
