Best OSU squads over the past 16 seasons

I was reading The All-Time (Since 1996) Big Ten Football Tournament - Introduction on Off Tackle Empire, where they are pitting the best champions from each of the 12 B1G schools over the past 16 years in a computer playoff on WhatIfSports.

They obviously chose the 2002 NC Buckeyes as their representative. I can't really argue that choice even if some of the other years might have been better teams with one (or more) heartbreaking losses.

My suggestion in the comments is that to make it a more true representation, they should seed each of the 16 years per school into their own mini-tournament and take the winners of each of those 12 tourneys into the Champions Final.

I decided to seed the past 16 OSU squads and got this result:

#1: 2002 (14-0) vs #16 1999 (6-6)
#8: 2003 (11-2) vs #9 2005 (10-2)

#5: 2010 (12-1) vs #12 2004 (8-4)
#4: 1996 (11-1) vs #13 2000 (8-4)

#3: 1998 (11-1) vs #14 2001 (7-5)
#6: 2009 (11-2) vs #11 1997 (10-3)

#7: 2007 (11-2) vs #10 2008 (10-3)
#2: 2006 (12-1) vs #15 2011 (6-7)

How well did I do in seeding the teams? What changes would you make?

The 2005 team kind of flies under the radar if you ask me. They had some minor struggles defensively that year but man that was an explosive offense.

Many can say that the 2002 team was the best because they got it done, but that 2006 team will forever be my pick as best over the last however many years. I remember watching the game with Florida like I do the Columbia disaster or 9/11, it just sticks with you. I’m still not over that, because that team was, in my mind, an unstoppable force.

It really made me realize that, even though we hate to admit it, the SEC is on a whole ’nother level.

Long lost article on the 2006 game....

The UF coach tasked with scouting tOSU in case they played in the title game had a son who was a QB on the Indiana team – the son was interviewed for the article.

They talked on the phone while an OSU game was on before the end of the season. The UF coach was able to accurately call run-pass every play based on the formation and personnel. tOSU was not bothering to disguise the plays, running pass out of some formations, run out of other formations.

If you watch the game again, you will see the UF defenders breaking to the right location on the snap of every play. When you know what is going to be called, you are going to look fast on D.

It was more obvious on the other side of the ball – tOSU game plan was to prevent the big play every down (on most plays the DBs are so far back they aren’t in the picture). Urban quickly realized this and was willing to take the medium gains and march the field.

I wouldn’t call them an unstoppable force – I canceled plans to chase down tickets and go to the game because I thought UF lined up well against the Bucks… but the lopsided results you can hang entirely on the coaching staff.

Yes they did...

No biggie, 20 comments in 5+ months won’t even get a site linked to in my favorites.

They found it offensive to comment:

The Badgers should be recruiting much, much better.

Bielema is a whiner.

Players that flipped started as tOSU leans before the Vest left – it wasn’t even a surprise to Bielema they changed their minds with Urban + tOSU.

Others have claimed Bielema did the same thing – not the best proof, but it would be a bit naive to believe Bielema has never, ever, tried to change the mind of a recruit after they gave a verbal commitment to another program.

If it makes Bielema feel better… …this was a temporary 3 month thing. After this year, players like Dodson will wait and sign with Urban, sparing Bielema the embarrassment of last minute flips.

…and I shot down the points of a site regular 1 by 1…

…apparently, this was a bit too much for B5Q and their regulars to handle.

I know. Very lame. I don’t even find anything offensive with that comment.

It's not an issue...

I rarely commented in the site – even in a title run, B5Qs NCAAF blogs were pretty bland – heck, I’ve had more blogs linked to by sites than they have, and I’m a hack.

Had it been Corn Nation, ATO, Off Tackle Empire, or even Black Shoe Diaries I might have been bummed.
